NJC Sets Up Panel to Investigate Misconduct Allegations Against Osun Chief Judge Adepele Ojo. The National Judicial Council, under the Chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has constituted a committee to investigate multiple allegations of misconduct against Osun State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Adepele Ojo. The integrity of the judicial system in Osun State has come under intense scrutiny following serious accusations against Hon. Justice Adepele Ojo. In its 107th meeting on November 13 and 14, 2024, the NJC sanctioned five judicial officers for misconduct and recommended the formation of a committee to probe the various complaints against Justice Ojo.At the heart of the allegations are claims that Justice Ojo has repeatedly failed to adhere to legal and ethical standards expected of her position. She stands accused of corruption, disobedience of court orders, abuse of office, and neglecting the core principles of justice. These actions are believed to have severely undermined the credibility of the judiciary in the state and cast doubt on its independence.A petition submitted to the NJC by the Concerned Citizens of Nigeria, Osun State Chapter, further outlined the gravity of the allegations. The petition claims that Justice Ojo’s actions have violated both the spirit and the letter of the law. The group accuses her of gross abuse of office, breaches of professional ethics, and a blatant disregard for the rule of law, which they argue has led to a loss of public trust in the judiciary.Earlier, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke took the decision to suspend Justice Ojo following a resolution by the State House of Assembly. The resolution cited serious allegations of misconduct, abuse of power, corruption, and failure to uphold the rule of law. One of the most alarming allegations involves the criminal misappropriation of proceeds from the notorious Ikirun robbery case. It is claimed that Justice Ojo unlawfully diverted funds from convicted armed robbers, further tainting the integrity of the state’s judiciary.Additionally, Justice Ojo is accused of taking personal vengeance against judiciary staff who had earlier exposed some of her alleged corrupt practices. Reports suggest that she dismissed several staff members who had shown courage in reporting her actions, creating a climate of fear and retaliation within the judiciary.Another serious allegation is her repeated disobedience of court judgments. Justice Ojo is said to have ignored rulings when it suited her, disregarding the law in a way that undermines the sanctity of the judicial process. This behavior has been described as sacrilegious, given her position as the head of the judiciary in Osun State.Furthermore, Justice Ojo is accused of diverting funds meant for Osun State judiciary staff, using her power to suppress those who questioned her actions. Any staff members who dared to challenge her allegedly faced persecution. This abuse of power earned her a notorious reputation within the state, with some even referring to her as the “IDI AMIN” of the Osun State Judiciary.Justice Ojo also reportedly took advantage of her position by unilaterally assigning contracts and converting proceeds from services such as affidavit payments into her personal accounts. This abuse of authority raised questions about her financial integrity and transparency within the judiciary.The Chief Judge has also been accused of intervening in cases involving corruption and fraud, particularly those involving certain South Western monarchs and local chiefs. Allegedly, she suppressed these cases in exchange for personal or political favors, allowing influential figures to evade accountability for their actions.In addition, Justice Ojo has been accused of compromising legal proceedings involving illegal mining activities and land degradation cases brought against certain monarchs and chiefs. By suppressing these cases, she reportedly allowed powerful individuals to escape the legal consequences of their actions, further damaging the credibility of the judiciary.There are also allegations that Justice Ojo perverted justice in cases of fraudulent real property dealings and criminal matters involving members of her own family and business associates. These claims suggest that she used her position to shield her relatives and associates from legal scrutiny, undermining the impartiality.One of the most disturbing allegations involves the cover-up of a heinous murder and the disappearance of gold miners of Hausa extraction in the Osun East Senatorial Zone in 2020. Justice Ojo is said to have obstructed justice by protecting those responsible for these crimes, further eroding public trust in the judicial system.Finally, Justice Ojo is accused of accepting a ₦13 million bribe from an applicant, Magistrate Lekan Ijiyode, during the last selection process for High Court positions in Osun State. This alleged act of corruption, in which she reportedly demanded and received a bribe in exchange for influencing judicial appointments, has raised serious questions about her integrity and commitment to justice.
