Maduka University Teaching Hospital Begins Operations in Nsukka
The Maduka University Teaching Hospital, Nsukka, has commenced full operations, following the conversion of the personal residence of the university’s Chancellor, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, into a healthcare facility.
The hospital, located at 37 Orba Road, Amukwa, Nsukka, began operations on Monday, Nov. 2, 2026, to provide quality, affordable and accessible healthcare services to residents of Nsukka and neighbouring communities.
Onyishi, who is also the owner of Maduka University, was the first patient to register at the facility on its opening day.
He reportedly travelled from Ekwegbe early in the morning to be the first person to register and patronise the hospital.
Mr. Anslem Ugwu was the second patient registered at the facility, with Onyishi paying the registration and consultation fees for both patients.
The conversion of the chancellor’s former residence into a teaching hospital is part of his contribution towards improving healthcare delivery and expanding access to medical services in the area.
The hospital is expected to complement existing healthcare facilities in Nsukka and provide residents with access to medical services without necessarily travelling to distant locations for treatment.
The institution operates on three major pillars: quality healthcare, teaching and service to humanity, with a mandate to provide medical services while contributing to the training of healthcare professionals.
Its management said the hospital was established to deliver quality, affordable and accessible healthcare to individuals and families.
The facility offers outpatient and inpatient services, laboratory investigations, radiology, maternity and child healthcare, emergency services and pharmaceutical services.
The outpatient unit provides consultations and treatment for patients who do not require admission, while the inpatient section caters for those requiring extended medical attention.
The laboratory and radiology departments are equipped to support medical diagnosis, while the maternity and child health unit provides services for expectant mothers, newborns and children.
The hospital also provides emergency medical services and pharmaceutical support within its premises.
The establishment of the teaching hospital is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in Nsukka, a university community serving several surrounding towns and rural settlements.
Beyond healthcare delivery, its teaching component is expected to support the development of medical and other healthcare professionals.
The hospital’s management has invited members of the public to utilise its services, reaffirming its commitment to quality healthcare and service to humanity.
It operates under the tagline, “Your Health, Our Priority,” and the motto, “Service to Humanity.”
