Port Harcourt – Continental Economy Magazine Television (CEMTV), a new privately-owned television station, has commenced broadcasting in Port Harcourt, expanding the broadcast media landscape in Rivers and the Niger Delta region.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, inaugurated the station during a ceremony in Port Harcourt on Thursday.
Adepoju expressed confidence that the station’s entry into the industry would promote healthy competition among broadcasters and improve service delivery to viewers.
According to him, journalism remains a critical partner in promoting public enlightenment, security awareness and national development.
“CEMTV provides viewers with option in a highly competitive industry, which is a good thing for Nigerians,” he said.
He commended the founder of CEMTV, Mr Kingsley MacAnthony, for investing in the broadcasting industry and creating employment opportunities.
The police commissioner urged the management and staff of the station to uphold professionalism, fairness and ethical standards in their reportage.
“Journalism is an important partner in promoting public enlightenment, security awareness and social development,” Adepoju said.
Speaking at the event, MacAnthony explained that the station was established to promote credible information, local content development and greater public engagement.
According to him, rapid advances in digital technology have transformed television broadcasting and audience expectations.
“This has made it necessary for media organisations to embrace both traditional broadcasting and online distribution,” he said.
MacAnthony said the station would broadcast news, current affairs, educational, entertainment and sports programmes.
He added that CEMTV would deliver its content through conventional television broadcasting and digital streaming platforms.
“The station will also provide community-focused programmes for viewers within Nigeria and in the diaspora,” he said.
MacAnthony said the station would create employment opportunities for journalists, broadcasters, producers, advertisers, and other professionals in the media and creative industries.
