Fear has gripped staff of the Eastern District of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Enugu over the alleged plan by the Enugu State Government to demolish their Railway quarters at station road.

To this end, the angry staff in their petition with reference number: NUR/32/Vol.II/79 dated December 17, 2024 was sent to the Managing Director Nigerian Railway Corporation Ebute-metta Lagos.

It was also copied to Managing Director, Railway Property Management Company Ltd
Kaduna, Honorable Minister of Transportation, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Abuja, Chairman House Committee on Land Transport,
Governor, Enugu State, Manager RPMCL, EGCP Railway Police Command, Commandant CSCDC, Railway Command District Chairmen/Secretaries NUR/SSA, EG

Parts of the petition issued by Comr. Alale Isaac (Vice President II), Comr. Engr. Kadiri Jibrin For Secretary General NUR Secretary SSASCGOC NRC Branch read:

“Following the ugly development at the Eastern District of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, the two in-house Unions have resolved to write with dismay on the incessant demolition of Railway Quarters by the Enugu State Government.
.
“The illegal action of the Enugu State call for serious concern, knowing well that the quarters are under litigation and without regards for court order.
The union wish to remind the NRC, RPCML management and Enugu State Government of the followings:-

“That the Railway Quarters monetization case is in the court of appeal where the workers are judgment creditors.
That the encroachment on the quarters, endangers the life of the workers and their families.
That the action could create serious danger to the out of court settlement which is in progress
.
“That these illegal steps are taken without the consent of the legal occupants of these quarters.
.
“That the previous case of demolished Railway structures such as Civil Engineering Training School, Staff quarters, Carriage & Wagon workshop, Operation Traffic Training School etc have not been concluded as the staff involved are yet to be settled.
.
“That while other regions of the country are working for better Rail line in their corridor, Enugu State is working against Rail line by demolishing Railway facilities.
.
“That the marking of the staff quarters along the Station road in Railway compound is not acceptable.
.
“That the union may be forced to consult our lawyer for contempt.
.
“In view of the above, we write to inform the management that any further demolition of staff quarters by Enugu State Government the Union may call for total shutdown of train operations across the Railway system.
“We hereby call on all concerned to stop this ugly practice and avoid industrial disharmony.”
