The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), says 11,143 of its students will be graduating during the 53rd convocation ceremony of the university slated for Dec. 21.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Polycarp Chigbu, disclosed this during a pre-convocation press briefing about the convocation on Tuesday in Enugu.
He said out of the number, 195 students earned First Class degrees, 4,165 awarded Second Class Honours (Upper Division) degrees, while 5,197 and 659 would receive Second Class Honours (Lower Division) and Third Class degrees, respectively.
The acting vice chancellor added that a total of 1,356 postgraduate degrees and diplomas of the University would be awarded at the convocation.
Breaking down the number, Chigbu said 431 students would earn Doctorate degree, 848 persons would be awarded the Masters degree while total of 77 postgraduate diplomas would also be awarded.
He explained that two persons would be decorated with Honorary Doctorate degrees, while two retired professors of the University would be elevated to the status of Emeritus Professor.
“They are Prof. Felix Ezema Onah of Faculty of Social Sciences) and Prof. Isaac Asuzu from Faculty of Veterinary Medicine”.
He stressed that the institution had continued to uphold history consistently in graduating its students, saying “With this number of awardees and recipients of the title of Emeritus Professor, it promises to be a colourful and historic convocation”.
Chigbu, notes that within four months of managing the affairs of the university, the school had been able to record some landmark achievements despite the daunting challenges.
“Today, our inventiveness has seen not only a lasting resolution of electricity challenges, we have gained deep insights into sustainable energy solutions for the future.
“The illegal connections, energy theft, irresponsible use and dereliction of duty that have sabotaged electricity supply in UNN have been diagnosed and cured to a very large extent.
“We have also initiated strong efforts to harmonize the working relationship among the members of the University of Nigeria Alumni Association and we are more than ever poised to tap the utmost from our alumni,” he said.
He added that the university had continued with efforts to build advanced critical infrastructural projects in keeping with its high regard for a befitting physical and academic environment in the university.
“With your support and commitment, the University of Nigeria recorded the highest ranking in SCOPUS database for scholarly output among Nigerian universities, with over 7,025 publications from 5, 813 authors,” he added.
