The Senatorial Candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in the 2023 general election for the Enugu North Senatorial District, Barr. Gideon Agbo has lamented the loss of Sen. Okechukwu Ezea.
Speaking to newsmen in Nsukka over the Weekend, he said that the death of Ezea had created a big vacuum following his brilliant showing in the Senate, not minding his first-term status.
“Ezea left at a time when Enugu North senatorial zone needed him most.
“Despite being a first-termer in the upper legislative chamber, he was very vocal and bold when presenting the needs of our people, ” he said.
Agbo, however, expressed hope that the people of Enugu North would elect a young, fearless and vibrant replacement to wear the big shoes left by the late senator.
“I think this is the time our people should not make the mistake of trying to replace Ezea with established protocols because the Senate seat needs an agile person.
“The red-chamber is a hot seat and not a sleeping chamber.
“Enugu North needs a young, vibrant and ebullient person who will carry-on from where Ezea stopped, ” he said.
On whether he will re-contest the seat in the bye election when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), announces the timetable, he said: “Sure, why not, my candidacy remains intact until 2027.
“Any day, any time, I remain the candidate of SDP; my candidacy expires in 2027, according to the Electoral Act. “
Agbo said that true change can only take place in Nigeria when the younger generations were given the chance to assert themselves in critical political situations.
“Everyday, we talk about change, change, change; how do we change if youths are not given the chance to vent their knowledge.
“Genuine change can only be achieved when everyone, including the youth is given the chance.
“I was this, I was that, is just because you were given the chance, if others are given the chance they can do better, ” he said.
He called on the INEC to do the necessary things within the law to ensure that Enugu north is not unduly denied of it’s seat in the upper legislative chamber.
It would be recalled that Sen. Okechukwu Ezea, representing Enugu North Senatorial district of Enugu State, passed away in November last year, after a brief illness.
