Hon. Aka Eze Aka, the Executive Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, at the weekend inaugurated Solar-Powered Boreholes in six political wards in the council area.
Aka said that the move was aimed at addressing water scarcity and improving public health at the various communities that made up the LGA.
According to the chairman, the projects formed part of his government’s community-based development agenda, in line with its commitment to sustainable infrastructure and improved living standards.
The boreholes are located at Smart School Obollo Eke; Orba Ward 1; Orba Ward 2; Ezimo; Imilike; and Udunedem wards.
He said the intervention aligned with the development vision of the Gov. Peter Mbah-led administration, which prioritised people-oriented projects across the state.
Aka said that the facilities were meant to solve the long-term water challenges facing the rural communities in the area.
“We believe that this will reduce residents’ dependence on unsafe water sources and eliminate the burden of long-distance treks in search of water, particularly for women and children.
“Each borehole is powered by solar energy to ensure uninterrupted, round-the-clock operation. The installations were constructed with durable components capable of lasting up to 50 years if properly maintained, ” he said.
The council boss tasked the community beneficiaries to take ownership of the facilities by safeguarding them against vandalism and misuse.
He added that government alone cannot sustain development without community partnership.
He further stressed the importance of collective responsibility in preserving public assets.
Responding on behalf of the Orba people, the traditional ruler of Orba, Igwe Ambrose Nwoye, commended the council chairman for what he described as exemplary leadership and impactful governance.
