Abuja, May 22, 2025 (NAN) Nigeria’s Teenage sensation, Grace Agbo, has made her mark in the golfing world by winning the ladies stroke play event at the ongoing National Sports Festival (NSF) in Ogun.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that with a total gross score of 84, Agbo secured top honours in a commanding performance, clinching gold for Team FCT.
Her victory ensured that Team FCT continued to make impressive strides at the NSF as the championship entered its third day, securing a total of nine medals across multiple sporting events.
An elated Agbo told NAN that the victory was particularly special for her as it was her first win in the National Sports Festival, following a podium miss in the previous edition held in Asaba.
“First of all, I started from the back nine with a par on hole 10, but reaching hole 11, I played 2 over.
“I had to chip into the cup to save for 7, and played a par on hole 18, which was by far the hardest hole where I had seen other golfers playing 15, 19, 21 just on that hole.
“This was indeed my biggest motivation, and what pushed me to go all out for the win,” she said.
She expressed her gratitude to her coach, Pro Dominic, her uncle, Jide and friend, Janet, whom she attributed her success and growth in the game to.
“These people are the key to my victory because I kept hearing their voices in my head on every hole.
“They kept encouraging me not to give up or lose hope no matter what.
“I am proud to announce that this is my first ever gold medal in the NSF, and I am hopeful of securing more for Team FCT before the end of the festival,” she said.
Luka Istefanus, FCT Director of Sports told NAN that Agbo’s win was a testament to her hardwork and dedication to golf.
“It’s exciting to see young athletes like Agbo excel in their respective sports.
“As a teenage sensation, she has a bright future ahead of her in the sport.
“Her achievement is sure to inspire other young golfers in Nigeria to pursue their passion and strive for excellence,” he said.
Agbo would have a shot at winning another gold medal for Team FCT when she takes on another challenge in the ladies’ stable ford event later on Thursday (today).
NAN also reports that a total of 11 golfers from FCT are competing in no fewer than 10 events at the ongoing festival.
The events include: eclectic, Four-ball stroke play (team), foursome stroke play (team), match play doubles, match play singles, and match play singles (professionals).
Others are: stroke play, stroke play 18 holes (professionals), staple ford 18 holes (professionals), and stable ford events.
Team FCT have so far amassed three gold, two silver, and four bronze medals, as the festival enters day four.
The festival which began on May 16, will end on May 30.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
