Abuja, Feb. 6, 2026 (NAN) The National Sports Commission (NSC) has confirmed the Nigerian Federation of American Football (NFAF) as the official body to govern and develop American football in Nigeria.
The confirmation marks a major turning point, restoring structure, credibility and national coordination to a sport previously affected by prolonged disputes.
The inauguration of the NFAF board will hold on Tuesday, Feb. 10, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The ceremony is expected to usher in stability and formal leadership after years of uncertainty within the sport.
NSC Director-General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, brokered peace among stakeholders, once again demonstrating his capacity to resolve crises in Nigerian sports.
“Sports development thrives only when unity and clear structures are restored,” Olopade said.
His intervention ended months of division, producing a united and credible federation positioned for sustainable growth.
“This Federation was created to bring order, credibility and national coordination to American football in Nigeria,” Olopade stated.
He reaffirmed the NSC’s commitment to grassroots expansion, institutional strengthening and global competitiveness.
“Our duty is to support federations that are focused on transparency, development and international relevance,” Olopade added.
Babajide Akeredolu emerged as President of the Federation, bringing proven leadership and continental success.
Under Akeredolu, Nigeria defeated host Egypt to win the maiden Africa Flag Football Championship in both men’s and women’s categories in 2025.
Akeredolu commended Olopade’s role, saying his intervention restored clarity, peace and direction to the sport.
“He united all stakeholders and gave American football a fresh start,” Akeredolu said.
“Today marks not just a Federation’s birth, but the beginning of a movement,” he added.
Technical Representative and Director, Sasore Bodunrin, described the development as a boost for youth empowerment and sports growth.
He said Nigeria looks forward to showcasing its talent at the Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany, in August 2026.
The Executive Board includes Babajide Akeredolu as President and Sasore Bodunrin as Technical Representative and Director, alongside other elected members. (NAN)
