Bonny (Rivers State), Jan. 24, 2026 (NAN) Golfers across Nigeria are upbeat as the 2025 NLNG Golf Classic begins at the Bonny Island Golf Club, promising stiff competition and memorable performances.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Nigeria LNG Limited-sponsored tournament is in its 8th year and sixth edition, consolidating its place as a major fixture on Nigeria’s golfing calendar.
No fewer than 100 golfers are competing across various categories at the lush Bonny Island course, known for its challenging layout and scenic water bodies.
Traditionally held in December, the tournament was rescheduled to Jan. 23rd and 24th, 2026, due to an official overlap, a move organisers say boosted preparation time.
Organisers noted that the new dates improved logistics, widened participation, and heightened expectations among golfers from different clubs nationwide.
Abubakar Hussaini, Captain of Bonny Island Golf Club, said members were excited to compete against top players from across the country.
“This tournament blends experience with emerging talent and strengthens unity among golfers,” Hussaini said.
He added that the course remains demanding, advising players to come well-prepared.
“Our water hazards are unforgiving. Golfers should come with plenty of balls,” he said, smiling.
Hussaini praised NLNG for sustaining the tournament.
“This platform inspires young golfers and reflects our culture of continuous improvement,” he added.
Michael Ukaegbu, Vice Captain of BIGC, described the sixth edition as a milestone for Nigerian golf.
“This is the sixth edition of the tourney and reaching this incredible milestone shows consistency, credibility, and trust from golfers nationwide,”
Ukaegbu said.
He noted that the rescheduling allowed players to arrive better prepared, both mentally and physically, for the two-day contest.
Darlene Cobham, Lady Captain of BIGC, said excitement was high among players and guests.
“It’s the glitz, the glam, and the joy of reuniting with friends from across Nigeria,” Cobham said.
She assured visitors of warm hospitality.
“Our guests should expect fun, quality golf and unforgettable moments on and off the course,” she added.
The Chief Host, Dr Sophie Horsfall, General Manager, External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, welcomed participants to Bonny Island.
“The NLNG Golf Classic celebrates camaraderie, networking, and our shared love for golf,” Horsfall said.
She described Bonny Island as unique and “the secret of Nigeria”.
“The flora, fauna, and people make this place special. Once you visit, you always want to return,” she added.
Prince Henry Agbodjan, Manager, Logistics, NLNG, said the tournament forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility initiatives.
Agbodjan said the Classic has come to stay, attracting golfers, partners, and industry stakeholders from across Nigeria.
He urged participants to enjoy the hospitality, scenery, and recreational opportunities Bonny Island offers beyond golf.
John Omole, General Secretary of BIGC, commended NLNG for sustained sponsorship and support for golf and sports tourism development.
Omole said NLNG’s support has helped position Bonny Island Golf Club prominently on Nigeria’s golfing map.
He assured participants of a professionally organised tournament and memorable social activities.
Ikenna Duru, BIGC Social Secretary, said several social events, including cocktails, dinner, and awards night, were lined up for guests.
NAN reports that players expect the event to showcase sportsmanship, skill, and rising talents, further boosting the Classic’s growing reputation.
Atiemie Braide-Lolomari, representing NNPC Ltd, said she was excited to participate for the third time.
“The course is tough but enjoyable. Any golfer who plays well here can play anywhere,” she said.
She praised NLNG’s hospitality, noting that first-time visitors would leave with lasting impressions.
Nnenna Ahube, immediate past Lady Captain of BIGC, said golfers were delighted the long-awaited tournament is finally here.
Ahube said her experience at the just concluded Nigeria Oil and Gas Games (NOGIG) prepared her well for the Classic and boosted her confidence.
Ahube who is also a serial winner at the NLNG Classic said the positive energy and excitement among players motivated her to give her best performance at NOGIG.
She said golf was her life, adding that she was hopeful of also doing well at this year’s NLNG Classic.
Lami Ahmed, President of the Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria, described the classic as a source of national pride.
“This tournament always delivers excellence, excitement, and a sense of being outside Nigeria,” Ahmed said.
She commended the organisers and BIGC management for their consistent standards.
Ali Peters, Vice Captain of TYB International Golf Resort and Country Club, Abuja, said he was impressed by the organisation.
“The reception has been top-notch, and the stories I heard did not exaggerate,” Peters said.
