‘WE COMMISERATE WITH THE FAMILY OF LATE HON AKINREMI JAGABAN AND PRAY FOR THE SAFE REPOSE OF HIS GENTLE SOUL’ -HON DR GHALI TIJJANI. A proactive federal lawmaker in the House of Representatives, Hon Dr Ghali Mustapha Tijjani representing the good people of Ajingi/Albasu/Gaya Federal Constituency of Kano State has paid glowing tribute to late Hon Akinremi Jagaban representing Ibadan North Federal Constituency of Oyo State while praying for his safe repose in heaven: ‘This is a sad day for us in the House of Representatives and you might recall that a few months ago, we also lost another colleague from Jigawa State, Hon lsa Dogonyaro of blessed memory. lndeed, Hon Akinremi Jagaban was a honest and dedicated member of this parliament, reliable and beloved by his colleagues and we wish him all the best and pray that he gets his justly deserved reward in the life thereafter. Truly, the demise of any human being is a bad omen but everyone must taste death and everyone has his own time of departure but we have to pray to the Almighty God that we leave this world for a good purpose. No one is happy to die and we extend our sincere condolences to his family members, his associates, his constituency and Nigerians at large. I believe that the House will do all that is necessary to support Hon Jagaban’s family. We also pray for the safe repose of his gentle soul and also pray that our dear nation should prosper as one united, stable and peaceful entity.’ Hon Ghali Tijjani also dwelt on some of his legislative achievements in the past one year: ‘l cannot give you the total number of projects, programs, bills and motions l have passed off head but l have dedicated my one year of legislative activity to making meaningful and impactful contributions in parliament. l have sponsored or co-sponsored a good number of bills and motions, some were passed, others were stepped down, but that is the beauty of democracy, you win some and you lose some. In terms of the delivery of democratic dividends, l believe l have done well for my constituency in the education, health, water provision, power, manpower development and youth and women empowerment sectors inspite of the limited resources at my disposal. I have strived to support my people materially and financially in all positive ramifications. My advice to the youths is that they should understand that governance is a serious business, they should be patriotic, be active in politics and be prepared to takeover the mantle of leadership from those of us who are presently in the legislature or the executive arm. As for those of us in parliament, we are doubly determined to prove our mettle and make a positive difference in the days and years ahead’.- an optimistic Hon Dr Ghali Tijjani concluded.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND DISASTER RISK REDUCTION INSTITUTE HONOURS CLINTON IGWE, ECOLOGICAL FUND PERMSEC WITH DISTINGUISHED FELLOWSHIP AWARD.Christian Jonathan.For his sterling achievements in addressing the negative effects of environmental degradation, environmental devastation, desertification, ecological disasters, gully erosion incessant flooding drying up of wetlands, forest fires and promoting environmental sustainability, green growth and climate adaptation policies, Chief Clinton lgwe, Permanent Secretary, Ecological Fund Office, Abuja was honoured by the Environmental Management and and Disaster Risk Reduction institute (EMDRRI) at a colourful ceremony in Abuja recently. The DG/CEO of the EMDRRI, Mr Stephen Ogboli conferred the Distinguished Fellowship Award on a beaming Chief Clinton lgwe who expressed delight at the award stating that it is a call for more dedicated service on his part: ‘l feel quite elated and see today as a special day because it is not every day that one is invested with such an honour. I also see it as a nod to greater performance both in and out of service. I am quite happy to be associated with this prestigious lnstitute and l am also convinced that those that matter in the EMDRRI deemed it fit to confer me with this honour based on my track record of performance. From the moment l took office in 2015 to date l have ensured that the presence of the Ecological Fund Office is felt in every community and in every state of the federation. So the lnstitute in their wisdom have seen some of my achievements and decided to do the needful today which l really appreciate.’- Chief Clinton lgwe added. On his part, the DG/CEO of EMDRRI hailed the remarkable strides of the resourceful Ecological Fund permsec noting that the lnstitute is engaged in addressing the harmful impacts of environmental devastation and so duly honours deserving personalities and organisations that complement it’s environmental sustainability agenda: ‘The EMDRRI is not only a scientific and research body but is also engaged in environmental sustainability, climate adaptation and green growth policies that will address climate change, desertification, ecological disasters and other negative environmental scenarios. So we are actively partnering with those that are involved in our area of activity. We have honoured the able permanent secretary, Chief Clinton lgwe today because of his outstanding achievements in environmental protection, erosion control and managing the after effects of flooding in diverse communities and states across the country. We believe this award will spur him to greater achievements in the environmental sustainability arena. The EMDRRI also organises workshops, seminars, training courses, sensitisation campaigns across the country and our members are in the National Assembly, the Executive and even the Honourable Minister is part of us and we are all working for the benefit of mankind. We have state offices in Benue, Delta, Edo as well as our headquarters in Abuja. – Mr Stephen Ogboli added.

‘WE ARE WORKING TOGETHER WITH THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO IMPLEMENT THE FOREIGN POLICY OBJECTIVES OF THE NATION’ – AMB. MAITAMA TUGGAR. Christian Jonathan NASS. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is actively partnering with the National Assembly to implement the foreign policy objectives of the nation as enshrined in the 1979 Constitution according to Hon (Amb) Maitama Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, erstwhile Honourable Member and Nigerian Ambassador to Germany. Amb. Tuggar made this revelation in an exclusive chat with newsmen at national assembly complex after an interactive meeting with the House Commitee on Foreign Affairs chaired by Hon Wale Oke at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja recently. According to Amb Maitama Tuggar: ‘We held this meeting to first of all, familiarise ourselves with each other, the chairman of the House Commitee, Hon Wale Oke, his deputy and other members of the committee. I came with my team, the permanent secretary and directors of the foreign affairs ministry and we discussed ways and means of implementing the foreign policy objectives of the nation as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution. We also discussed budgetary matters so that the House can give us the necessary support we need when faced with financial challenges and we have to work together because our budgets have to be approved by the National Assembly and fortunately we have people on both sides who are experts in budgetary matters having handled such issues time and time again. So we have identified areas of crucial importance that we need to put heads together to resolve in order to move the process forward in all positive ramifications. The Foreign Service Commission Bill is also before the House as we believe that the peculiarities of the Nigerian foreign service entails the establishment of a Foreign Service Commission and it is getting the required attention of the National Assembly.’A visibly upbeat Amb. Maitama Tuggar also expressed delight at interacting with his former House colleagues many of whom are presently serving their third or fourth tenures in the august parliament while noting that the Executive and the Legislature are partners and not competitors in the governance arena: ‘l am elated to see many familiar faces, my former colleagues from way back who are still very active in the House. And the beauty of parliament is to see ranking members as either chairmen or cognate members of committees contributing their own quota and experience in the legislative process. And people have to understand that parliament is not an enemy of the executive branch, it is not bellicose to the executive arm but rather a partner working together for the development of Nigeria. We are two arms of the same government working together to move the nation forward in all facets of development ‘ – Amb. Maitama Tuggar concluded.

HOUSE OF REPS INTERACTS WITH NUPRC ON ADEQUATE FUEL SUPPLY.The House Commitee on Petroleum Resources Upstream Sector chaired by Hon Alhassan Ado Doguwa has engaged the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission in an interactive session during a meeting with the stated aim of collaborating to move the petroleum sector forward. The interactive session was held with a NUPRC delegation led by the Executive Secretary, Engr Gbenga Komolafe at the National Assembly Complex Abuja recently. On his own part, the NUPRC scribe stated that the Commission is ready to collaborate with the National Assembly and other stakeholders in order to ensure adequate fuel supply nationwide. Komolafe in fielding questions from the Commitee members present regarding the high price of petroleum products nationwide stated the NUPRC is committed to and will ensure the availability of petroleum products in the market on a willing seller/ willing buyer basis. Also the Commitee Chair, Hon Ado Doguwa and other members present reiterated that the National Assembly is committed to ensuring their oversight functions are carried out in a manner that carries all and sundry along in the crucial scheme of things. Hon Doguwa therefore urged NUPRC as well as all other agencies in the petroleum sector to devise creative means and innovative ways to move the sector forward in all positive ramifications.

HOUSE COMMITEE ON PETROLEUM UPSTREAM SECTOR URGES NUPRC OTHERS TO BRING DOWN COST OF FUEL.The House Commitee on Petroleum Upstream Sector chaired by Hon Alhassan Ado Doguwa has urged the various agencies regulating the petroleum sector to ensure that the price of fuel and other petroleum products are drastically reduced for the benefit of the common man during a meeting with a delegation of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) led by the Executive Secretary, Engr Gbenga Komolafe recently. On his own part, the NUPRC scribe stated that his Commission will not regulate the pump price of petroleum products sold in the market as it is against the provisions of the Petroleum Industry Act ( PIA) passed by the National Assembly as well as being contrary to governmental practices globally. Engr Gbenga Komolafe in fielding questions from the Commitee members present regarding the high price of petroleum products nationwide stated that while the NUPRC is committed to and will enforce the availability of petroleum products in the market, the ultimate decision on the price of the products lies with the suppliers and marketers on a willing seller/ willing buyer basis: ‘the petroleum upstream sector is run as a private business worldwide, governments don’t get involved in running it. If we the regulator of the industry get into price fixing, it will not get us anywhere, let me be frank with you. Not only are we unwilling to do so but it will be antithetical to the provisions of the PIA which you ( the National Assembly ) asked us to implement. The PIA states that we enforce the domestic supply of petrol and issue guiding prices but the suppliers and buyers will meet, discuss and ultimately arrive at the pump price of the petrol products’ – Engr Komolafe added. However the Commitee Chair, Hon Ado Doguwa and other members present reiterated that the National Assembly is concerned about the high cost of petroleum products and it’s aggravating effects on the economy and negative impact on the citizenry and will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the prices fall drastically in order to propel economic growth and developmental progress. Hon Doguwa therefore urged NUPRC as well as all other agencies in the petroleum sector to devise creative means and innovative ways to bring down the prices of petroleum products for the ultimate benefit of the Nigerian people.
