Dr Chuka Eze
An Opinion
As the people of Enugu North Senatorial Zone prepare for the forthcoming bye-election to fill the vacancy created by the passing of Senator Okey Ezea (popularly known as Ideke), the political landscape of the district has entered a defining moment. The unfortunate demise of Senator Ezea in November 2025 brought an abrupt end to what many regarded as a bold and people-oriented representation in the National Assembly. His absence has not only created a political vacuum but has also raised critical questions about leadership continuity and the future direction of Enugu North representation in the Senate.
The late Senator Ezea left behind a legacy marked by courage, independence, and unwavering commitment to his constituents. His style of representation, largely free from external political control, earned him admiration across the state’s political divides. As echoed in tributes, including Peter Obi’s, Ezea consistently prioritised the welfare of his people, often framing national issues through the lens of their local impact. This benchmark inevitably sets a high standard for his successor.
Meanwhile, as the search for a worthy replacement intensifies, it becomes imperative that the process transcends traditional political patronage. The people of Enugu North must resist the godfatherism or anointed candidate and instead prioritise competence, integrity, and a demonstrable track record of service to the Enugu North senatorial zone. The moment calls for leadership that is both independent in thought and accountable in action, that can further the development that his predecessor had started.
Within this context, the emergence of Dr Celestine Chuka Eze as a potential candidate introduces an interesting dimension to the discourse. Dr Eze’s profile reflects a blend of technocratic expertise and political engagement, spanning over three decades across banking, governance, and strategic advisory roles. His academic credentials, which include a PhD in Peace, Conflict, and Development Studies, complement his professional exposure in financial management and institutional leadership.
His career trajectory in the banking sector, particularly his leadership roles at First Bank of Nigeria and earlier institutions such as GTBank and Metropolitan Bank, demonstrates experience in managing complex systems, stakeholder relationships, and public-sector portfolios. Notably, his oversight of multi-state public sector accounts suggests familiarity with governance structures and intergovernmental coordination—skills that are increasingly relevant in legislative functions. His
His core competencies are Political Strategy, Advisory Campaign Planning & Execution, Grassroots Mobilisation, Stakeholder Engagement & Conflict Resolution, Public Sector Governance, Policy Development & Political Research, Treasury & Financial Management, Leadership & Institutional Strengthening, Opinion Polling & Data Analytics.

Dr Eze addressing his ward
Beyond his corporate background, Dr Eze’s involvement in political strategy and grassroots mobilisation further strengthens his profile. His role in national campaign coordination and advisory positions indicates experience in navigating political systems and engaging diverse stakeholders, e.g., Dr Eze served as the Director General of Senator Datti Ahmed’s Presidential Campaign Team (PDP) (2018).
Additionally, his participation in socio-cultural platforms such as the Oha Nsukka Forum reflects an ongoing commitment to community cohesion and regional development discourse.
However, while credentials and experience are important, they must ultimately be measured against the pressing developmental challenges facing the Enugu North senatorial zone. Issues such as infrastructural deficits, youth unemployment, economic stagnation, and weak public service delivery require more than rhetorical commitment; they demand actionable policy engagement and legislative effectiveness.Dr
Dr Eze’s administrative and leadership skills can match the quest to achieve good governance and the developmental goals of Enugu North senatorial zone. His recent political realignment has been framed as a strategic decision aimed at repositioning the zone for inclusive growth. His
His emphasis on rebuilding trust, expanding opportunities, and addressing inequality resonates with broader public expectations. Yet, as with all political aspirations, these propositions will require clear policy articulation, measurable plans, and sustained engagement with the constituents in achieving success.
The broader implication of this electoral moment is that Enugu North stands at a crossroads. The choice ahead is not merely about filling a vacant seat but about redefining the quality and direction of representation that will bring the required development needs of the people. The
The electorate must therefore critically evaluate all aspirants, not on sentiment or affiliation, but on their capacity to deliver the effective, people-centred leadership they want.
In this regard, the candidacy of Dr Celestine Chuka Eze will signal a new phase in the political evolution of the zone. Indeed, the emergence of new actors and ideas suggests that a new era is unfolding. The responsibility now rests with the people of Enugu North to shape that era through informed, independent, and forward-looking choices.
