The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Enugu State chapter has urged the State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) to declare the seats of 260 Councillors vacant with immediate effect.
This was contained in a statement signed by Dr Godwin Udibe and Chief John Nwobodo, Esq, Chairman and Secretary of the PDP Caucus in the state.
In the statement, made available to newsmen on Sunday in Enugu, the PDP threatened to institute legal actions to stop further payment of salaries to the councillors.
“We call on ENSIEC to, immediately conduct bye election to fill the vacant seats of the 260 Councillors which have become vacant due to their defection to APC.
It would be recalled that the 260 councillors in Enugu State, who were elected on the platform of the PDP, on October 14, 2025 joined in the mass defection to the APC.
The PDP caucus described the continued stay in office by the councillors as “illegal and unlawful.”
The caucus said: “Section 24 (1)(d) of the Local Government Law No. 13, 2020 provides that: “A member of a Local Government Council shall vacate his seat in the Council –
“(d) being a person whose election was sponsored by one political party, he resigns from that party or becomes a member of the other political party before the expiration of the period for which the Local Government Council was elected.”
The PDP further said in order to forestall wasteful spending of public funds on erstwhile councillors, it would approach the Court for further action.
“We shall immediately approach the Court to seek an order restraining the government from paying salaries to the councillors, ” the caucus said.
