The Former Nigeria International Boxer, Ilechukwu Okoronkwo on Sunday commended Nigeria Boxers for wining three Gold and three Bronze at the concluded Africa Olympic Qualifers in Dakar, Senega
Two male and a female won Gold and that qualified them to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
Nigeria won six medals at the qualifier as the male picked two Gold while the female won a Gold and three Bronze to give the country a good representstion in Dakar.
Okoronkwo said the rule of the qualifier was that only those that won Gold qualified while the female includes those that won Silver medal.
He noted that Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) gave 3 male and 6 female opportunity but only 2 male and a female qualified to host the country flag at the Olympic.
“However International Olympics have another chance for Africa qualifications series by November 2023.
“It is important that all Olympics male boxers that were dropped by those concerned in NBF be given opportunity to show case their talent.
The boxers may qualify to the Paris Olympics and Nigeria will have more chances to win medal in the Olympics.
“I want all the boxers that finished first to be at the last trial on November Olympic qualifications for the interest of fair play, National Unity and spirit of sportsmanship,” Okoronkwo advised.
Okoronkwo said that the Nigeria Boxers did not disappoint the country as anticipated by concerned NBF officials that were responsible for selection of whom to represent the country.
He named the three boxers that won Gold at the qualifiers as follows, Omole Dalapo Joshua, won Gold in Featherweight (54kg to 57kg), Olaore Olaoitan Adams won Gold in Heavyweight ( 86kg to 92kg) for male.
In the female category, Cynthia Ogunsemilore won Gold and became the queen of the ring in lightweight ( 57kg to 60kg).
Meanwhile, Oyesiji Adeola Omowunmi won Bronze in Flyweight, Ojo Nene Joy won Bronze.Featherweight and Patricia Mbata won Bronze Middleweight.
