NMC/UBEC train JSS Mathematics Teachers in Cross River

The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) in conjunction with the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has organised a 2-week training workshop for 150 mathematics teachers of Junior Secondary Schools in Cross River State.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Calabar, the Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board,
Senator Stephen Odey said training and re-training of teachers have become necessary to further strengthen the basic education sector.
Odey thanked NMC for the training adding that, the 2 weeks training programme would afford teachers the opportunity to review old methods of teaching mathematics and further equip them with modern trends in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Odey, who was represented by the Director of Academic Services, SUBEB, Mr Emmanuel Ikade stated that, one of the ways to improve learners’ performance in mathematics is to, first tackle the phobia many learners have of the subject.
“I hope that at the end of this exercise, teachers will be well equipped to work on the psych of learners so that they will develop a positive attitude tow
ards learning mathematics, ” he said.
In his welcome address, the Director and Chief Executive, National Mathematical Centre, Prof. Promise Mebine said the National Mathematical Centre (NMC) was set up to develop strategies and devices for the development of teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels.
Represented by Dr Azuka Benard, Registrar of NMC he described mathematics as the springboard for modern development.
“The gap in the development of the advance world and the developing world is the gap in the teaching and learning of mathematics, ” he said.
He thanked CR-SUBEB for accepting to host the training exercise and urged participants to pay rapt attention throughout the training programme in order to learn from the well-versed resource persons.
Speaking, Chairman of the State Secondary Education Board, Mr. Ebe Idagu commended the NMC for organising the training programme for mathematics teachers.
According to him, this will bring new innovation into the educational system and expand the scope of learning and teaching mathematics in the state.
