
The National Association of Nigerian Students, zone ‘F’ has called on authorities of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), College of Medicine and the State Government to cancel the result examination scheduled to hold on Tuesday, October 3, by 9am or risk mass protest.
NANS zone ‘F’ comprising the South East States stated this at a press conference held in Enugu on Monday.
In the address read by comrade Juliet Obinta, NANS national representative South East, the students condemned in totality the high handedness of the school authority and their insensitivity to plight of students inspire of current economic hardship in the country.
The students body insisted that owing to the harsh economic realities in the country, the new arbitrary law/rule introduced by the college should be reversed forthwith.
NANS said: “All the students of 3rd MMBS (400 level) are to partake in the resit examination regardless of the number of courses they failed.
“The harsh unwritten law/rule which is said to be under review won’t hold for them until proper assessment and modality is set.
“As it stands, such law is not contained in their college handbook and is not properly certified by the ESUT Senate.”
NANS further urged the college management to desist from further victimising students under the guise of any harsh laws.
“This particular law is harsh, wicked and not obtainable in any college of medicine ” NANS said.
The students body called for a one month extension of the examination to allow “this psychologically disoriented students to properly prepare and participate in the resit exams.”
“Failure to respond to this as soon as possible will be met with peaceful resistance from NANS.
“Failure to do as demanded by NANS and the affected students, the zonal leadership will take the necessary actions, ” NANS said.
The association also frowned at the exorbitant fees charged students by various institutions within the zone and appealed to the institutions to revert to the old rate while dialoguing with the students.
“The zonal leadership via this convention urges all the institutions within the zone that have increased their fees to revert with immediate effect as the zonal leadership of NANS have set up a panel to probe such unrealistic increment, ” the association said.
Other students who were at the press conference included comrade Chidobe Okwuchukwu, NnS zone ‘f’ deputy Coordinator, Daniel Uzochukwu, NANS president Enugu State college of education technical, and comrade Chris Oguka, Senator NANS.
