In preparation for the hosting and winning of the 2026 National Sports Festival (NSF), tagged “Coal city games,” the Enugu State Government has organised Secondary Schools Sports Championship.
The championship known as, Gov. Peter Mbah, Secondary Schools Sports Championship, kicked- off, on Wednesday, March 2026, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
Dan Onwuegbuna, the Director of Information in the state Ministry of Youth and Sports, who represented the Commissioner, Lloyd Ekweremadu, said the Championship was designed to discover hidden sports talents.
“This zonal championship for secondary schools is designed to nurture and expose our young sports talents to national and international stardom, ” he said.
The commissioner explained that the championship was the culmination of sporting events held in various secondary schools in the last two weeks in the six educational zones.
The six zones include Agbani, Awgu, Enugu, Nsukka, Udenu and Udi.
He noted that, 60 athletes from each of the six zones, totalling 360 athletes would be competing for honours in various fields of sports.
These are Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis; Athletics events such as 100metres 200metres 400metres, 2by 400metres and 4 by 400metres, relay races.
Other events include, High jump, long jump, Shot- put, Discus and javelin boys and girls respectively.
The commissioner said the championship promised exciting and entertaining display of raw sporting talents by young secondary school boys and girls across the state.
Also speaking, the Secretary of Enugu State Football Association, Frank Ugwu, said the championship would assist the selection of athletes to represent the state at the 2026 national sports festival.
In an interview, Ugwu said the championship was a welcome development.
“It’s timely and apt; it will help us to pick the best athletes to represent the state at the festival.
“The athletes selected here will join the ones already in camp and the best will be selected to represent the state, ” he said.
In some activities which took place on Wednesday, Awgu zone male football team defeated Enugu zone by 3-1 in a penalty shout-out.
Udi zone defeated second Awgu team by 1-0, thus the two teams, (Awgu and Udi) zones, thereby qualified for the semi-finals.
They are joined in the semi-final by Agbani zone and Obollo Afor zone teams respectively.
The championship is expected to end on Saturday March 14, 2026.
