
The Nsukka Education Zone is currently dominating the ongoing 3rd Edition of the Governor Peter Mbah Secondary Schools Sports Championship, taking place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.
In a release by the Director of Media, Enugu State Ministry of Sports, Dan Onwuegbuna, after the day one of the championship, the Nsukka zone has won two gold medals, courtesy of Emmanuel Omeje, who clinched gold in the Boys’ Long Jump with a jump of 5.89 metres, and Julian Diovu, who won gold in the High Jump after clearing 1.76 metres.
The zone also secured three silver medals through Caleb Diugwu, who won silver in the High Jump, while Julian Diovu added another silver medal in the Long Jump. Precious Nwigwe also won silver in the Girls’ 100 metres and Abigail Ugwu won a bronze medal.
Awgu Education Zone is currently placed second, with two gold medals through Precious Nwaoha, who won gold in the Girls’ High Jump, while Ngozika Ugwu also clinched gold in the Girls’ 100 metres, finishing in 12.43 seconds.
A total of six Education Zones — Awgu, Agbani, Enugu, Nsukka, Obollo and Udi — are competing for honours in the championship.
In the football events played on the opening day, the Nsukka male team defeated Obollo 8–7 on penalties, while Enugu Zone beat Awgu 3–1 on penalties after regulation time.Udenu
Udenu Zone also recorded a 1–0 victory.
In other matches, while Agbani defeated Udi 1–0.
In the female category, Enugu Zone defeated Udi 3–0, while Nsukka thrashed Awgu Zone 5–0.
The Semii- final of female category football will feature Awgu zone versus Obollo zone at 9.00 am, while Enugu Zone will slug it out with Nsukka Zone.
In the boys semi -finals matches, Obollo zone will meet Awgu Zone for the Semi- final slot, while Udi Zone will face Agbani Zone.
