Workers of Enugu state civil service have hailed the decision of the state government led by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to direct all civil servants in the state to resume work on Monday, August 3, 2020.
FirstNews reports that the directive for the resumption of work by the said civil servants under the state employ was contained in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya.
Speaking with FirstNews reporter who conducted a vox pop on the news of the resumption of work by civil servants under Enugu state employ after staying at home over the Coronavirus lockdown order which stopped workers from grade levels 12 downwards, from going to work, Mr. Francis Agu, described the news a welcome development.
Agu said that the awareness being carried out by health organizations on the preventive measures needed to be applied by people to contain the spread of the novel Covid-19 pandemic which led to the lockdown of economic activities across the world, was enough to make the workers resume.
He said that the virus has come to stay like every other viruses adding “all we need to do is to avoid exposing ourselves to those things that will make us to be contaminated by the disease or spread it if infected.”
Speaking also, Mrs Mary Ogbu, said that the experience of staying at home for over four months was not an easy task noting that she used the opportunity to develop a skill of soap making adding, “I am making enough income from the sales of my products.”
Meanwhile, the state government in the said resumption statement, advised returning civil servants to observe all Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) protocols for containment of the spread of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19), “including hand washing with soap, use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer, compulsory use of face shield/mask and maintaining social distancing”.
It would be recalled that following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the Enugu State Government, directed all civil servants in the state to work from their homes since March 23, 2020, as part of measures to contain the spread of the viral disease.
The state government has been paying salaries of civil servants, as and when due, since the lockdown.
