Abuja, Jan. 30, 2026 (NAN) Nigeria will host Uzbekistan in the 2026 Davis Cup World Group II Play-off, scheduled to hold between Feb. 7 and 8 at the historic Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Lagos, as confirmed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).
Team Nigeria is expected to feature Adeleye Daniel, Emmanuel Michael, Bulus Christopher, Abua Canice and Alafia Ayeni, competing in singles and doubles for a historic home victory.
Nigeria earned the play-off ticket after an impressive outing at the Africa Group III event in Zimbabwe, finishing among top teams alongside Namibia and Senegal.
The ITF subsequently awarded Nigeria hosting rights, handing the team a major boost with home crowd support in Lagos.
Victory over Uzbekistan would move Nigeria into World Group II and closer to World Group I, edging the country towards the elite Davis Cup World Finals stage.
Reacting, Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) President, Victor Ochei, expressed confidence in the players and preparations for the crucial tie.
“This is a defining moment for Nigerian tennis. Our players are ready, and Lagos will deliver a world-class hosting experience,” Ochei said.
He added that the team’s unity and recent performances give hope for success against a strong Uzbek side.
“We respect Uzbekistan, but we believe in our boys and the power of playing at home.”
Ochei also praised the Lagos State Government, National Sports Commission and Local Organising Committee for ensuring facilities and logistics are in top shape.
“Their support shows Nigeria’s readiness to host and win at this level,” he said.
The play-off is expected to attract strong local interest as Nigeria seeks to reassert itself on the global tennis stage. (NAN)
