Abuja, Feb. 25, 2026 (NAN) The Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has appointed Chief Dr Ogwu James Onoja as Patron and Ambassador of the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT).
Onoja was also presented with a plaque in recognition of his steadfast support and commitment to advancing women’s golf in Nigeria and across Africa.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chief Onoja, SAN, FCArb, is a legal practitioner and notary public with the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
He is also the Agenyi-Attah of Igala Kingdom.
Presenting the appointment letter, LGAN President Dr Lami Onayi Ahmed said the association was honoured to have Onoja serve as Patron and AACT Ambassador.
Ahmed noted that the championship would hold from Nov. 1 to Nov. 7, 2026, at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, with over 30 African countries expected to participate.
She described Onoja as a respected leader whose influence, integrity, and mentorship would strengthen partnerships and boost confidence among stakeholders.
“As Patron, you will provide strategic guidance, attend key events, and promote LGAN’s objectives,” she said.
“As AACT Ambassador, you will mobilise national support, promote the tournament’s values, and align with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope sports agenda.”
She emphasised that Nigeria previously hosted the AACT in 1996 and 2010, adding that 2026 would further showcase national capacity and leadership.
Responding, Onoja described sports as a powerful unifying force in Nigeria and across the world.
“Sport brings people together beyond ethnicity and politics. It is one platform where we see a truly united Nigeria and Africa,” he said.
He added that beyond recreation, sports promote health, discipline, and social development.
Onoja noted that he had been a member of the IBB International Golf and Country Club for 12 years, affirming his longstanding passion for golf.
“I have always identified with golf. It builds character, patience, and strategic thinking,” he said.
Describing the AACT as significant, he said women’s participation in sports deserved strong encouragement and institutional backing.
“When women compete at continental level, they represent excellence, resilience, and national pride. That must be supported,” he said.
He commended LGAN’s leadership for laying a solid foundation and working selflessly for national glory.
“Hosting Africa will shine a positive light on Nigeria and give us an opportunity to showcase our organisational strength,” he said.
Onoja pledged goodwill and partnership to ensure a successful championship.
“On behalf of my family, I accept this honour and assure you of my full support,” he said.(NAN)
