When the sixth edition of the BBNaija franchise, Shine Ya Eye, kicked off on July 24, 2021, it was with so much excitement and expectations from viewers, and housemates.
Five weeks down the journey, so much has transpired among the 26 Shine Ya Eye housemates, Big Brother, and viewers.
The Tasks
As promised by MultiChoice, organisers of the reality show, the tasks for Shine Ya Eye housemates have not only been engaging but taxing too. From the revised Head of House challenge to the Abeg Friday night tasks, Patricia Arena games, and more, the 26 housemates that got into the house had their hands working to achieve their aims. Over 80 hours after the show kicked off, Biggie opened the floodgate of tasks which ranged from energy-draining tasks to drama and singing challenges. The Abeg and Patricia designed tasks to test the physical abilities and mental alertness of the housemates. The first Abeg task was a theatrical presentation where housemates had to develop a musical theatrical drama in celebration of Nigeria. The housemates, at different times, crawled under nets, jumped like soldiers, and lifted heavy tractor tyres like weightlifting experts. The five evicted housemates and the remaining 20 housemates got their grit tested as well as their ability to endure pressure so much that Niyi, Saskay, Jaypaul, Emmanuel, and Arin won$3500 at the first Patricia Arena games. Art inclined and educative tasks were not left out as the housemates have participated in painting twice – one during the token task, where housemates had to earn a certain amount of BB Tokens by displaying their artistic prowess, second was during the SuperSport “Unbeatable” task. Team Premium and Jolli emerged winners in this task, with each team winning N1.5m to be split among team members. One thing Big Brother has stuck with is the inclusion of all housemates in undergoing every task. For all the tasks, Big Brother instructs all the housemates to partake either as an individual or a team.
The Drama
As expected in the BBNaija house, the drama remains a constant feature. And the Shine Ya Eye housemates have continued to dish out dramas in full dose. Big Brother was the first to initiate the drama when he introduced different twists from two opening ceremonies to two wildcards and introducing four new housemates in the second week of the show. On the part of the housemates, from Maria to Princess, Tega, Queen, Pere, Whitemoney, and Nini, the drama has not seized in the house since the first week. From Peace giving now-evicted housemate, Beatrice, a piece of her mind to Queen slugging it out with Maria at one time or the other to Pere and Whitemoney struggling for the reins of control, stronghold, and power in the house, and Angel flirting with every male housemate despite leading Sammie on, the drama has continued to keep viewers glued to the TV sets.
Evictions
So far, five out of the 26 housemates that participated in the Shine Ya Eye edition have been evicted after five weeks. In the second week of the show, Yerins became the first housemate to be evicted this season – this is not unconnected to one of Big Brother’s many twists on the show that gave Maria and Pere a good starting edge. Niyi, the self-confessed married man on the show also found his way home, and Beatrice, who was begrudged by many housemates for false reasons also got evicted in the second week. In the third week, the evictions continued with Arin and Princess getting evicted after polling the lowest votes among the nominated housemates up for possible eviction. Housemates like Whitemoney, Yousef, Tega, Nini, and Emmanuel have escaped eviction in the second and third week respectively. For the fourth week, Big Brother surprised viewers and the fourth Head Of House, Maria as he suspended nomination and eviction.
The unknown
One of the features that made Big Brother Naija a popular show aside from the drams is the suspense and intrigue. Neither housemates, fans nor viewers always have a clue of what will happen next in the house. Big Brother decided to relax the HOH game, add wildcards, suspend nomination and eviction but instructs the HOH to act otherwise. One of the unknown and unplanned moments in the house was when one of the 26 housemates, Kayvee, who joined the show in the second week, left the house in the fourth week – spending barely nine days.
According to the organisers, “Kayvee, one of the housemates in the Big Brother Naija Shine Ya Eye Season, has been exited from the House on medical grounds. Prior to this, he had a consultation with Big Brother and the on-site medical team, where it was decided that he had to leave the house for a more thorough medical investigation. MultiChoice and the show producers, are committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all housemates in the Big Brother house at all times.”
