SUBEB boss frowns at low turn out of pupils for 2nd term in Cross River

Dr Stephen Odey, Executive Chairman, Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board (CR+SUBEB),, has expressed dissatisfaction over low turnout of pupils for 2nd term 2021/2022 academic session in public primary schools in parts of the State.
Odey made this known on Friday when he visited some schools Yala and Ogoja Local Government Areas respectively as part of his on-going needs assessment/inspection tour of schools across the state.
According to him, the turnout of pupils in most schools visited was disappointing and below expectations.
He appealed to parents and guardians to release their children and wards back to school as full academic activities have fully commenced.
Odey, however suggested that poor attitude of teachers towards their jobs might have contributed to the low turnout of pupils and charged teachers to live up to their responsibilities.
“Teachers who fail to do so will be shipped out and others who are ready to work will be brought in to aid the State Government’s transformation agenda in the basic education sector, ” he said.
He said that, Gov. Ben Ayade was commited to transforming the education sector through infrastructural and manpower development.
The executive chairman pledged the State Government’s support in rehabilitating school structures in the state through the UBE counterpart fund.
“I urge members of staff of these schools to compliment government’s efforts by maintaining and putting school facilities to good use, ” he said.
Responding, the Principal of UBEC Junior Secondary School, Yala, Mr Micheal Otona commended the SUBEB for it’s relentless efforts at improving basic education in the state.
He assured that, members of staff of the school will redouble their efforts towards improving the overall quality of the school.
