The Global Model(GMA) Academy, Bagusa, Dei Dei, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has appealed to the Senate to enact laws to encourage and support private schools in Nigeria.
The Executive Director of GMA, Elder George Ugwunna made the call during the school’s 2025 graduation ceremony in Abuja on Saturday .
According to him, the significant contributions private schools in the country’s education sector can not overemphasized.
He said the number of private school enrollment was on the increase in some areas compared to public schools enrollment.
He urged the Senate to consider appropriation of funds for onward transmission as grants and other forms of support to private schools.
This, he said would further enable private schools operators consolidate delivery of quality education.
The executive director commended parents for their cooperation and emphasizing the school’s commitment to academic excellence of students.
He said over 50 indigent children have been awarded scholarships to facilitate their access to quality education.
On the challenges facing private schools, Ugwunna noted that private schools face significant challenges, including lack of finance, multiple taxation, and limited government support.
He,however, said addressing the key challenges would be a major boost to Nigeria’s education sector.
Mr. Okafor Emmanuel, the Parent Teachers Association (PTA) Chairman commended the school for its impressive growth and commitment to providing quality education.
He urged the school management to improve its Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) infrastructure to meet international standard.
He also urged the school authority to also focus on preparing students for the digital age.
Mrs. Comfort Ugwunna, the Managing Director (MD) of the Academy, emphasized the importance of private schools contribution toward education in Nigeria particularly in rural areas.
She urged government at all levels to reduce multiple taxation and provide grants to support private schools.
“The Senate’s support for private schools could be a game-changer in improving the quality of education in Nigeria.
“By providing grants and reducing taxation, private schools can continue to deliver quality education and contribute to the development of the country.
“Enactment of a law to that effect will go a long way.”
