Vigilance groups in Kontagora, Niger State, have taken the fight to bandits in the area following the gruesome murder of their emir’s son, Bashir Namaska on Thursday.
Several persons were feared dead after the bandits stormed the area, the hometown of the Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani-Bello.
The terrorists killed the eldest son of the Emir of Kontagora at his father’s farm alongside others working on the farm at Masuga village on the Kontagora-Rijau road in Niger State.
The traditional ruler’s son was the Sardauna of Kontagora and had been holding the fort for his father who has been sick for some time.
He was said to have been shot by the bandits on Thursday and later rushed to the hospital where he was confirmed dead on arrival.
Consequently, the vigilance groups gathered en masse and took to the forest areas where the bandits reportedly operate from.
A Kontagora resident said he sighted hundreds of them as they passed and headed towards the Kontagora-Rijau road axis on Friday.
The vigilantes were armed with various types of weapons, including dane guns, swords, daggers, matchetes and clubs, among others.
