Port Harcourt – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has urged residents to remain alert to security risks in public places throughout the Easter festivities.
The Commandant of NSCDC in Rivers, Basil Igwebueze, issued the warning in a statement released by the command’s spokesman, SC Olufemi Ayodele, in Port Harcourt on Friday.
He emphasized the importance of exercising caution, particularly in areas prone to criminal activities, to avoid becoming easy targets.
“Flashpoint areas such as recreational/event centres, religious gatherings, motor parks, markets, and crowded public spaces where criminals may perpetrate their acts of crime.
“Departments heads, unit heads, area commanders, divisional officers, and location supervisors have been directed to deploy personnel to strategic points to prevent crime before, during and after the Easter celebrations.
“About 2,300 personnel deployed for the holidays are drawn from various units within the command, including the Marine Unit, Arms Squad, Counter Terrorism Unit, Anti-vandal Unit, and Intelligence Unit,” he stated.
Igwebueze further announced the deployment of other units for internal security operations, such as the Anti-human Trafficking and Illegal Migration Unit, Agro Rangers Squad, Commandant’s Quick Response Squad.
“Personnel are charged to step up their operational, intelligence, overt, and covert techniques on both land and waterways during the festive period.
“Criminals often exploit festive period to carry out illegal operations, so officers are tacked with securing all critical national assets and infrastructure in the state.
“Parents and guardians are advised to caution their wards, as anyone involved in vandalism, kidnapping, or any acts disrupting peace and order will face legal consequences,” he added.
