Abuja, Oct. 5, 2024 (NAN) No fewer than 400 golfers from four countries are set to slug it out for honours in the second edition of the TYB Ladies Open Golf Championship in Abuja.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament is scheduled to hold from Tuesday, Oct. 9 to Sunday, Oct. 13 at the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club, Abuja.
Maureen Apute, the Lady Captain of the club told NAN on Saturday that this year’s edition of the championship promises to be bigger and better.
“We had the first edition of the championship in 2021 and those that were here can testify that they really had so much fun.
“All is now set to host the second edition and we are expecting no fewer than 400 golfers, both male and female from within the country as well as some other African countries.
“The championship is expected to feature some ladies from Uganda, Ghana, Sierra Leone and hosts Nigeria.
“We expect to play 54 holes over three days in the 18-hole tournament. The pros and caddies will also be playing. So, we are anticipating a huge crowd here at the club,” she said.
Apute said the objective of the tournament was not just to compete for the coveted trophy and other mouth-watering prizes, but to also promote camaraderie.
She noted that the tournament would bring together golfers from diverse backgrounds, nationalities, ages and skill levels, adding that it would inspire friendships, foster national pride and create unforgettable memories.
“Whether you are a seasoned pro or an amateur enthusiast, it would be an opportunity to showcase your skills, learn from others, and forge lasting connections during the various stages of the tournament.
“Participants will have the chance to tackle our challenging but lush course and enjoy the refreshing hospitality with limitless enjoyment that our unique club provides,” she said.
Cynthia Maurice, the Competition Secretary for the TYB Ladies Section said the week-long event, would begin with the Caddies competition on Tuesday, Oct. 9.
Maurice said that this would be followed by the pros/category 1 players/ special category ladies and vetran ladies (handicap 29 to 36) on Thursday.
“The tournament proper begins on Friday, Oct. 12 with participants expected to slug it out for honours in the various categories over three days.
“The flag hoisting ceremony is also expected to hold same day from 4 p.m. with participants expected to wear the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria (LGAN) jacket as the dress code for the ceremony.
“This will be followed by the ceremonial tee-off at 5 p.m with several eminent personalities and dignitaries expected to grace the event,” she said.
She explained that qualifiers would be drawn for Day three with only 50 ladies expected to make the cut to determine the winner of the championship on Sunday, Oct. 13.
She added that there would be some side attractions to spice up the event within the last three days of the tournament.
“There will be an all-white cocktail on Friday, Oct. 11 from 7 p.m., while a karaoke/old school night will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12.
“The dinner/awards presentation will hold on Sunday, Oct. 13 from 4 p.m, followed by a grand party to draw the curtain on the event,” she said.(NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
