Ogoja (Cross River), Nov. 14, 2022 (NAN) Mr Augustine Bisong, the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP) candidate for Boki II State House of Assembly says elections must be based on personal achievements rather than party affiliations.
Bisong told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross River.
He stressed that every candidate must be giving an equal opportunity to show what he or she was bringing to the table, regardless of which party they represent.
While noting that he was in the race because he believed that he had done alot for the people of his community, he added that he still had alot more to achieve.
“That is why we are in the race. Politics today has taken a different dimension completely.
“Over the years, we have come up with political parties, for instance in my community they will tell you that we have got the biggest party in Africa.
“But the truth is that, party affliation have not really helped us. Rather it is the individuals that occupy political offices that have opportunity to do something.
“The party is not a living being. So, people are beginning to have a re-think and say ‘look, it is not party, it is about the person’,” he said.
The State House of Assembly candidate stressed that what the so-called ‘big parties’ do these days was no longer election, but selection.
He said he was confident that he would emerge victorious at the polls giving his precedence, adding that his mandate was the wish of the people, regardless of his party affiliation.
“For instance, while we were conducting the primaries, you discover that these parties bring people of their own choice irrespective of what the local people in the community want.
“So, you will be shocked and surprised that for the first time in the history of Nigeria, we will witness an election that will produce winners from an entirely different political party.
“Today, I can tell you that no one political party can beat its chest and say it is going to win the election, especially in Cross River State.
“So, Rabiu Kwankwaso and our gubernatorial candidate Amb. Wilfred Bonse have the same chances just like any other candidate and it is the same chances that I have like any other candidate here in Cross River State.
“My past achievements is my biggest selling point. I have held political offices before and I have done well for my people and they are in turn urging me to run.
“This is what the true situation of things are right now and I am very confident that I have already won the election because the voice of the people they say is the voice of God,” he said. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
