The Nsukka Education zone has emerged the overall winners of the 2026, Dr Peter Mbah Secondary Schools Sports zonal Championship, which ended on Saturday at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Sports Complex, Enugu.
After the one week of sporting activities, Nsukka zone, which comprised, Nsukka, Igbo Etiti, and Uzo Uwani Local Government Areas, emerged the overall champions with 10 Gold, 9 Silver and Five Bronze medals.
Nsukka zone, which won the championship for the third consecutive time, having emerged overall best in 2024, 2025, and 2026, thus went home with a giant trophy.
Enugu zone came second with Six Gold, One Silver and Six Bronze medals, while Awgu zone came third with Three Gold, Six Silver, and Four Bronze medals.
Speaking after the event, Lloyd Ekweremadu, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports expressed appreciation to Gov. Peter Mbah, for making the championship possible through his visionary leadership.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, I extend my profound gratitude to Gov. Peter Mbah, whose visionary leadership continues to prioritise youth development through education and sports.
“His unwavering support has enabled initiatives such as these games to thrive nurturing talents and building character among our young people, ” he said.
The commissioner also commended the Chairman of Enugu State Post Primary School Management Board (PPSMB), Fr. Hillary Mgbodile, for partnering with the ministry for the success of the event.
Ekweremadu said that the partnership reflected a shared commitment for a holistic education where academic excellence is complemented by physical development and sportsmanship.
He also commended the athletes for their discipline and dedication throughout the games, adding that they were all winners.
“Whether you won medals or not, your courage, determination, and respect for the rules of the game have brought honour to your schools, your zones, and our great state, ” he said.
Ekweremadu said that the talents discovered during the games would be harnessed for the forthcoming national youth games and the national sports festival to be hosted by the state.
Speaking, Fr. Mgbodile, said the games lived up to the expectations, adding that a lot of young talents have been discovered
“Reports shows that many young talents have been discovered, which is the true essence of the championship, ” he sad.
