Edwin Ugwuja, Retired Assistant Commandant General (ACG) of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps has advised the Federal Government to carryout recruitment of more officers for the corps.
Ugwuja gave the advise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN),on Monday in Enugu.
He said this has become necessary following President Bola Tinubu’s directive that the corps should take over VIP protection duties across the country.
He said that the NSCDC at present was understaffed to meet up with the additional responsibility bestowed upon it.
“So, the Federal Government, through the management of the corps should try as much as they can to recruit more hands especially now that they have been given additional responsibility.
“The issue of VIP protection is not a tee-party; it us a huge task, ” Ugwuja said.
He said whereas over 100,000 policemen were involved in VIP operations nationwide, NSCDC as a whole is below 80,000 operatives; so, how can you operate under this condition.
The former Taraba Commandant of the NSCDC also advised the management of NSCDC to recall some retired gallant officers who have left the service to help out in the additional responsibility.
“Let them bring them back on contract basis maybe for a period of three years or less than that.
“I know some retired officers, highly trained and who are still very gallant to complement the situation, ” he said.
On the issue of tackling insecurity in the country, Ugwuja called on the citizens to always avail the security agencies with intelligence to enable them decimate the enemy.
“It behooves on the citizens of this country to give security agencies actionable, reliable and trustworthy intelligence because without it you cannot achieve your security objectives, ” he said.
The retired ACG said that fighting asymmetric warfare was difficult without credible and accurate intelligence.
He, however, expressed optimism that Nigeria would come out victorious at the end.
