Desperate efforts by members of the State Assembly to arm twist the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and by extension Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to grant automatic tickets to all members, may have hit a brick wall.
An inside source confided in Everyday News that the idea was actually presented to the governor “but I can tell you that it died on arrival.”
Our source said such proposal cannot fly because most of them are not popular in their constituencies and the party cannot afford to field a second eleven in the forthcoming election.
He also pointed out the issue of zoning in some areas are so stringent arguing that the party may be committing political suicide to take such an undemocratic position.
The threat posed by the All Progressives Congress, APC as the party in power at the center could also have informed the decision of the party to reject the proposed automatic tickets to all members.
It is believed that as it was in the days of the PDP, the ruling party will control the army and the police such that there may not be enough room for rigging or manipulation.
Thus the credibility of candidates, the issue of zoning, credible primary must be the considered in selecting party flag bearers.
The State Assembly led by Rt. Hon Edward Ubosi has had a wonderful relationship with the executive but there is a popular feeling that most members who have done two terms should give way for others.
However, this school of thought believes the Speaker and his Deputy Chief Donatus Uzoagbado may have been cleared for another tenure in the Assembly.
