The newsmen trooped out en masse, defiled the evening rain shower to take part in a Service of songs organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ.
In his homily Rev. Fr. Michael Ogbu, asked journalists to be dedicated and to always stand for the truth and justice in their service to humanity.
The cleric noted that God would not forget any person or group that joins in bringing succor and relief to people by serving with truth and justice.
“We must live our lives in a way to promote truth and justice, which by extension is serving humanity.
Speaking, the National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Mr. Abdulwaheed Odusile, who was represented a national officer of the union and former Vice President National Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Her Majesty Chieso Aninwagwa, described Abugu as a peace loving man.
Chairman of the Chapel, Mr Petrus Obi, thanked all for defying the rain to attend the service of songs and pay respect to “our own’’.
The service was attended by the state Commissioner for Information, Mr Ogbuagu Anikwe, various special assistants to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on media matters and other government functionaries.
Others include South East Vice President National Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ Mrs Chibota Edozie, heads of media houses, bureau chiefs of various newspapers, correspondents, newspaper vendors etc.
The late Abugu, who was appointed Chief Press Secretary by Governor Ugwuanyi in 2015, died on June 4 in a hospital in India, after a protracted illness.
Before the appointment, he was the South-East Bureau Chief of New Telegraph Newspaper.
He will be buried on Friday, June 29, at his hometown in Olido Enugu-Ezike.
