In a bid to monitor the pace of ongoing projects across the state, the Enugu State Government has continued its inspection of works at the 260 smart green schools and 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare facilities being constructed across different wards in the state.
As part of this initiative, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, alongside his team, visited Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area to inspect the ongoing construction of 16 smart green schools and 16 Type-2 primary health centres.
The Chairman of Igbo-Eze South LGA who doubles as the Deputy Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria – ALGON, Barr. Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze, accompanied them throughout the exercise across the different political wards in the council area.
According to the SSG, the smart schools will provide pupils and students with digitally equipped classrooms, modern teaching tools, and a conducive learning environment to enhance education standards across the state.
“By integrating technology into education, these schools aim to improve literacy, digital skills, and overall academic performance,” Onyia added.
He said that the Type-2 Primary HealthCare facilities will bring quality healthcare closer to the people and also offer essential medical services such as maternal and child care, immunisation, emergency treatment, diagnostic services, and management of common illnesses.
“Each facility is designed to function as a mini-hospital, equipped with modern medical technology, trained personnel, and essential drugs, ensuring that residents no longer have to travel long distances for basic and emergency healthcare.
“These facilities will reduce infant and maternal mortality rates, improve public health, and strengthen disease prevention efforts in rural and urban communities,” he said.
During the inspection, Prof Onyia urged the contractors and site engineers to adhere strictly to quality standards and project specifications.
The state government emphasised that substandard work or the use of inferior materials would not be tolerated, and any contractor found engaging in sharp practices would face stiff sanctions and possible rejection of their work.
They were also urged to complete the projects within the agreed timelines to ensure that the people of Enugu State benefit from the facilities as scheduled.
