Ekpetiama Monarch Marks 10 Years on Throne as Bayelsa Community Celebrates New Yam FestivalEkpetiama Monarch Marks 10 Years on Throne as Bayelsa Community Celebrates New Yam FestivalThe Ekpetiama Kingdom in Bayelsa State on Saturday, celebrated the 2026 Okoloda Aya Buru Fi Uge (New Yam Festival) alongside the 10th coronation anniversary of its monarch. The festival, themed “Our Culture, Our Pride,” was held at the Gbaratoru Town Hall in Yenagoa Local Government Area.Speaking at the event, the Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama Kingdom, King Bubaraye Dakolo, said the festival symbolises unity, peace and gratitude for a bountiful harvest. He urged residents to forgive one another and embrace peaceful coexistence to ensure greater prosperity and harvests in the future.According to him, insecurity and communal conflicts would have made it impossible to celebrate the festival in such an atmosphere of peace.Dakolo commended the Bayelsa State Government for promoting peace and reconciliation across communities, noting that Ekpetiama had benefited from the initiative. He also applauded the government for developing infrastructure, including the airport and road projects within the kingdom. The monarch, however, appealed for the construction of a pavilion to accommodate the growing number of participants at future festivals.Representing Gov Douye Diri, Deputy Governor of Bayelsa, Dr Peter Akpe described the festival as a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Ijaw people. He emphasissed the importance of preserving indigenous languages, warning that languages face extinction when they are no longer spoken. The deputy governor recalled legislative efforts to promote the teaching of the Ijaw language in primary schools when he was a lawmaker. He urged communities to take deliberate steps to revive and sustain their cultural heritage.Akpe also highlighted the economic potential of yam cultivation, noting claims of its health benefits and prospects for agricultural development. He said the state government remained committed to supporting initiatives that promote culture, agriculture and tourism.Congratulating Dakolo on his 10th anniversary, he prayed for continued wisdom and successful leadership. The deputy governor further called on communities experiencing chieftaincy disputes to embrace dialogue and peaceful resolution. He assured residents that the state government was working to address outstanding traditional leadership issues across Bayelsa.Member representing Yenagoa/Kolokuma-Opokuma Federal Constituency, Hon Oforji Oboku, described the festival as colourful and inspiring. He said cultural festivals promote love, unity and peaceful coexistence among communities.Oforji praised the women of Ekpetiama Kingdom for their commitment and contributions to the success of the celebration.Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Hon Abraham Ingobere, said the festival remains a symbol of identity and heritage. He urged indigenes to preserve traditional values and pass them on to future generations.Ingobere pledged continued legislative support for cultural initiatives across the state. The Amananaowei of Gbaratoru Community, Igonia Ibolo XI, described the event as a turning point for the festival. He said this year’s harvest was one of the largest recorded, reflecting the blessings and hard work of the people.Ibolo expressed optimism that future editions would attract wider recognition and participation. Also speaking, Peremobowei Erebulu, a traditional leader said the continued celebration demonstrated the resilience of the kingdom’s culture and traditions. He noted that the impressive display of farm produce reflected the community’s enduring commitment to agriculture.Erebulu urged residents to remain united and peaceful, expressing confidence that Ekpetiama could become a major yam-producing and exporting hub in the future. Governor urges prayers for improved security, peaceful, credible elections, cum successful transition in 2023

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has described #Governor Ifeanyi #Ugwuanyi of #Enugu State as a bulwark, strong pillar and highly cherished partner of the Christian Community.

Presenting his address during this year’s Mega Prayer Rally in Enugu, the Chairman of CAN, Enugu State Chapter, Rev. Amb. Emmanuel Ositadinma Edeh, appreciated Gov. Ugwuanyi’s commitment to God and his invaluable support to the Christian Community in the state.

Rev. Edeh said that CAN is delighted to be associated with the governor and his uncommon leadership style which has entrenched enduring peace, security and development in Enugu State.

“My appreciation goes to our God fearing, peace loving and indefatigable Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, a man with a heart of gold, a listening and action governor whom God is using mightily to maintain unparalleled peace and security in our dear Enugu State,” he said.

Stressing the governor’s commitment to peace and security, the CAN Chairman added that the feat has “made Enugu State the number one state in Nigeria as far as venue for hosting regional, national and international programmes is concerned, because of the safety we are enjoying here in our dear state.

“I most especially thank you Sir, for being a bulwark, a strong pillar and a wonderful senior partner with me and the Christian Community in Enugu State, as you always hearken to us whenever we reach out to you.”

Speaking on the significance of the prayer rally, Rev. Edeh explained that the theme, “Watch and Pray,” reflects the situation in Nigeria which he said could be likened to the time of pains, sorrows and agony of Jesus Christ on earth when “He (Christ) needed men that could watch and pray with Him (Matthew 26 vs 36-41)”.

The CAN Chairman therefore called on “all Christians in Enugu State and beyond to hearken unto the admonition of our Lord Jesus Christ to watch and pray, so that we can overcome all the challenges facing our nation today.”

Earlier in his speech, the Secretary of CAN, Enugu State Chapter, Barr. Onuora Okeke, thanked Gov. Ugwuanyi for his immeasurable commitment towards the success story of the prayer rally, which he said, started under his administration when His Lordship Rt. Rev. Christian Obiefuna was the chairman of CAN.

Barr. Okeke said: “Because Enugu State is in the hands of God, Gov. Ugwuanyi was present at the first prayer rally of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Enugu State Chapter.

“We have been having other programmes here but the prayer rally started with His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and he has been supporting us. And all the prayer rallies we have held he has always been here in person. We want to thank you Sir.”

In his address, Gov. Ugwuanyi used the occasion to appreciate God for the peace and unity being enjoyed in Enugu State as well as the progress made as a people in spite of all the challenges confronting the country.

The governor urged the people to pray for improved security of life and property in the state, peaceful electioneering campaigns, credible, free and fair elections, and successful transition in 2023.

He commended the leadership of CAN in Enugu State for organising the annual Mega Prayer Rally “which is most needed at this time.”

Gov. Ugwuanyi went further to congratulate the new leadership of CAN in the 260 wards of the state who were inaugurated at the event, reiterating that his administration will continue to work in partnership with CAN in their duty of spiritual intercession for the state.

“As we recall our struggles, successes and reflect on your challenges, may we give all honour and glory to Almighty God and pray Him to show us mercy, bless the work of our hands and afford us the courage, divine wisdom, health and strength to accomplish that which will bring more happiness to our people and lessen their pains in this difficult time.

“In humble adoration, I acknowledge God’s goodness to Ndi Enugu. I proclaim His faithfulness and I beseech Him to heal our troubled nation by filling our hearts with more love, tolerance and spirit of forgiveness in Jesus name,” the governor prayed.

Prayers were offered by the heads of CAN blocs for the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, using Enugu State as a point of contact. Prayers were also offered for the leaders in Nigeria, Enugu State, the governor and his family and the youths of Nigeria – for wisdom, honesty and great moral values, using Enugu youths as a point of contact.

Prayers were equally offered against insecurity, criminality and bloodshed in Nigeria; for sustained peace and security in Enugu State; and finally in thanksgiving to God and confession of sins.”

Present at the event were the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga represented by Rev. Fr. Geoffrey Aguigwo, the Archbishop of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province and Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Emmanuel O. Chukwuma represented by Venerable Emeka Ezeji, the Archbishop, Methodist Church Nigeria, Enugu, Most Rev. Christopher Ede, Bishop Dr. Godwin Madu of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), the Guest Speaker and Anglican Bishop of Enugu North Diocese, Rt. Rev. Engr. Sosthenes Ikechukwu Eze, among others.
