President Muhammadu Buhari claims that the 1967–1970 civil war in Nigeria could have been averted if not for the greed and selfishness of the political elites at that time sounding a serious warning that he doesn’t want something similar to happen again.
Buhari made that statement at the State House in Abuja when he welcomed the former state chairman of the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC). He said that it was self-centeredness that cost about a million lives between 1967 and 1970 and pleafed with Nigerians not to allow such to happen again by refraining in acts capable of causing war. The president who himself participated in the war as a young senior military officer must have spoken out of experience.
He also pointed out that dedication to Nigeria’s unity and patriotism served as the cornerstones upon which the CPC was established.
He stated that the passion and eagerness for raising Nigerians’ standard of life, which led to the political party’s founding, had not abated, and he urged greater consistency on the part of Nigerians.
According to the president.” We are human beings. He started Although we are not flawless, I can assure you that we have earned our patriotism. We’ve had all of them since the initial troubles started on January 15th, 1966. You know what I mean when I say that we slaughtered a million of ourselves in order to keep this country united.
