PC-NCG Calls For Unity, Integrity, Due Process In Nigerian Coast Guard Advocacy
The Provisional Committee for the Establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard (PC-NCG) has called for unity, integrity and due process in advocacy for the proposed service.
The committee said the campaign for the establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard must remain credible, transparent and firmly focused on the national interest.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, its Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Dr. Piriye Kiyaramo, made the call.
Kiyaramo issued the statement on behalf of the committee’s Chief Executive and Accounting Officer, Capt. Noah Ichaba.
The committee warned against attempts to appropriate the Nigerian Coast Guard identity while undermining legitimate advocacy processes already underway.
It said such actions could create unnecessary fragmentation, confusion and competing claims around the proposed national institution.
PC-NCG urged genuine supporters of the Coast Guard initiative to prioritise cooperation and constructive engagement over competing claims and distractions.
It stressed that personal influence, financial interests, ethnic or religious sentiments, and perceived access to political power should not determine a national institutional process.
“Influence is not immunity; access is not authority. The Nigerian Coast Guard belongs to the Nigerian people,” the committee stated.
It said the service must emerge through legitimate constitutional and legislative procedures and be anchored on a clear legal framework.
The committee thanked the Federal Government, National Assembly, maritime stakeholders and Nigerians for their support for the Coast Guard initiative.
According to PC-NCG, establishing the service requires a clear legal foundation, defined mandate, sustainable funding and proper delineation of responsibilities.
“The objective is not to transfer power, but to strengthen civil maritime governance, security, safety, environmental protection and the blue economy,” it said.
The committee also urged maritime professionals, graduates and investors to remain optimistic about the initiative.
It said their aspirations could only be protected through a credible, transparent and properly structured process.
“One cannot claim ownership of a national cause without knowledge, structure, sacrifice and results,” PC-NCG stated.
It called on stakeholders to build rather than destroy and unite rather than divide in pursuing the Coast Guard initiative.
The committee further urged leaders and security agencies to remain impartial and ensure that claims surrounding the initiative were properly verified.
“Truth has no hidden agenda. Justice has no tribe. Law has no religion,” it stated.
PC-NCG maintained that the Blue Economy required corresponding measures to strengthen maritime security, justice, safety and environmental protection.
“There cannot be Blue Economy without Blue Security and Blue Justice,” the committee stated.
It said it would not respond to propaganda with propaganda but would continue presenting facts to relevant authorities.
The committee also invited Nigerians interested in supporting the establishment of the Coast Guard to join the process
at no financial cost.
