Abuja, Feb. 12, 2026 (NAN) The Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN) has commenced preparations to host the 2026 All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) from Nov. 1 to Nov. 7 in Abuja.
The association unveiled its plans at a press conference in Abuja, rallying stakeholders and partners for what is expected to be a landmark continental championship.
Nigeria will host the tournament for the third time, having previously staged it in 1996 at Ikoyi Club and in 2010 at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.
The 2026 edition will again be held at the prestigious IBB International Golf and Country Club, with about 40 African countries expected to participate.
LGAN President Lami Ahmed expressed confidence in Nigeria’s readiness and ambition for the tournament, declaring that the country is not only prepared to host but determined to emerge victorious.
“We are not just hosting to showcase our capacity; Nigeria is hosting to win,” Ahmed said. “Our players are prepared, our structures are in place, and we are determined to make the nation proud.”
She noted that early preparations, strategic training programmes, and renewed partnerships were already underway to ensure Team Nigeria competes strongly against the continent’s best.
Ahmed also expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for their endorsement and unwavering support for sports development in the country, particularly women’s golf.
“We sincerely appreciate President Bola Tinubu and the First Lady, Her Excellency Oluremi Tinubu, for their encouragement and support,” she said.
“Their commitment to sports development and women’s empowerment gives us great confidence as we prepare to host Africa.”
She further commended the Chairman of the NSC, Shehu Dikko and the President of Nigeria Golf Federation, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, for aligning with LGAN’s vision and providing the necessary institutional backing to position Nigeria for success.
The LGAN President also expressed gratitude to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his infrastructural strides in Abuja, which she said would contribute significantly to the successful hosting of the championship.
“We are grateful to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his continuous efforts in
improving infrastructure and security in the capital city,” Ahmed said.
“We appeal for even more collaboration and support to ensure Abuja delivers a world-class tournament experience.”
In a symbolic ceremony, the AACT logo was unveiled, signalling the formal commencement of preparations for the continental showpiece.
Immediate past LGAN President Evelyn Oyome assured that arrangements were progressing smoothly.
“All preparations are on top gear with regards to accommodation, logistics, and security for golfers coming from across Africa,” Oyome said.
“We also have exciting side attractions and tourist destinations lined up to thrill our guests and give them a memorable Nigerian experience.”
Ekanem Ekwueme, AACT Trustee for West and Central Africa, commended Nigeria’s sustained commitment to women’s golf development.
“Nigeria has consistently demonstrated leadership in promoting the game,” Ekwueme said.
“We are confident the 2026 edition will set new standards for excellence in Africa.”
AACT President from Gabon, Madamè Cécile Poncet, who spoke via zoom, described Nigeria as a trusted host with a proven capacity to deliver world-class events.
“We believe in Nigeria’s ability to provide a safe, vibrant, and competitive environment for all participating nations,” Poncet said.
“Africa’s best golfers will experience an unforgettable tournament.”
NAN reports that other LGAN officials at the event included former president Julie Monyie-Inyere; National Secretary Rose Nyam; and the Financial/Subscription Secretary Igho Ugbegu.
Others were the Public Relations Officer, Igbieregbo Ogolo; and Jumai Adamu, the Lady Captain of TYB Golf Club, among others.
The 2026 championship underscores Nigeria’s rising profile in golf and reflects improved sports development, enhanced security, and a welcoming atmosphere for athletes and visitors.(NAN)
