The Chess Conclave of the Enugu Sports Club has concluded its promotion and sensitisation programme in nine selected Secondary Schools in Enugu metropolis.
During the exercise, members of the conclave, visited 9 selected secondary schools including, Queens School Enugu, College of the Immaculate Conception (CIC) Enugu, Holy Rosary College Enugu, Abakpa Girls Secondary School Enugu, among other schools.The
The nine secondary schools were provided two new Chess boards, two dictionaries, while the students were taught how to play chess game.
According to the Chairman Enugu State Chess Association Board, Dr.Onwumere , the exercise was to teach students Chess game; promote the game as well as help select some of the best players who will represent Enugu State in the forthcoming National Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Enugu State in 2026.
“” After the visits we will sit down and do our mathematics and start further visits and give the students time to learn the game, master it and then play among themselves.
“” During the next visit we will do assessment and monitoring to determine the Champions amongst them who will represent Enugu State in the forthcoming National Sports festival.
“We have no reason to lag behind; as you know we have male and female category, senior and junior and middle categories’.
“” It is important we have Champions of each category so that they can win medals for Enugu State.” he said.
In his remarks, the Deputy Leader Chess Conclave , Enugu Sports Club, Sir Clement Okwor, observed that the students were excited, “” they were excited by our visit and want to learn playing chess.Playing
“Playing chess needs intelligence if they can translate to their real life, being calculative, being careful, being strategic in their life situation, because life is all about judging the environment and taking the opportunities you have’, ” he said.
According to him, in Chess game, you do not just move, you move by calculating the pros and cons in the movement.
“I am so happy the students are catching up fast. If we continue to do this in all Secondary schools, in Enugu State we will turn out to be chess tournament zone and the children will win laurels at the state, national and international levels”,he stated
.
In his vote of thanks the Gamesmaster, Abakpa Girls Secondary School, Mr Ejike thanked the Chess Conclave for presenting the school chess equipment and encouraging the students to play chess through the training and visit to the school, he promised to ensure that the students will be come Champions.
During the visit, a member of Chess CONCLAVE, Mr Joseph Okafor and Coach Gil Eze, taught the students the fundamental principles of Chess game.
In attendance during the visit include, the Chairman Enugu State Chess Association Board, Dr John Onwumere, the Deputy Leader ChessConclave Sir Clement Okwor, the Secretary ChessConclave Dr. John Brown Emenike, Mr Joseph Okafor. As well as the Coach, Mr. Gil Eze and Director Information Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dan Onwugbunam.
