Centre matriculates 8 students in Enugu
The Centre for Advanced Library and Information Management (CALIM), Enugu has matriculated eight students to study Library and Information science as it
begins academic activities.
The eight students were the first students to be admitted into the centre since its inception in 2013.
Matriculating the students, the centre which is the only centre for advance library learning in the country would become the first Monotechnic in Nigeria offering a single programme.
The eight pioneer students who came from Gombe, Plateau, Bauchi, Kwara, Enugu and Enugu sat for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organised by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) before the admission was given to them.
Speaking during the matriculation ceremony, the National Liberian and the Head of Supervisory Agency, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi said the matriculation marked the official enrollment of students into the monotechnic academic programme.
She explained that the two year National Diploma (ND) was fully accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), adding that at the end, the graduated students would be awarded with ND certificates.
Anunobi equally explained that CALIM which came in place in 1993 to enhance the competence and capacity of library and information professionals had the Enugu Centre was created in 2013.
Addressing the students, the national librarian said, “It is my belief that God will use this school to nurture your growth and development in all facets of life.
“As you begin this new phase in your academic life, I encourage you to approach your studies with seriousness and determination”.
She pointed out that the centre had appointed dedicated scholars to provide them with the best education and pledged to create inspiring learning environment for them to excel.
Anunobi also warned them against indecent dressing and other unruly behaviour, stressing that assessment and class attendance formed 40 per cent to their exam.
In a welcome address, the Chairman of the event, Dr Egor Ise told the students that the course they undertook was a very lucrative one, saying they had taken good step by studying library and information science.
Ise who is the Head of Department, Cooperative Economist and Management, Federal Cooperative College, Oji-River, Enugu noted that days had gone when people go to university to study medicine and law but people diversify into various discipline that fetches them money.
“This is what you have by accepting to study in the centre,” he said.
He implored them to abide by the norms of the school and subject themselves to a good decorum by studying their books.
The Guest Speaker, Dr Innocent Eze from the Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Enugu also urged them to be a good user of library, pursue their academic activities seriously to avoid carryovers and be security conscious.
One of the matriculating student, Emmanuel Bitrus from Plateau State said he sat for UTME before he was admitted into the centre and promised not disappoint his parent and the centre but would strife hard to make them proud.
