PDP Defies Bayelsa Govt, Insists Hunger, Poverty Must Be AddressedThe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has vowed not to be intimidated in holding the Bayelsa State Government accountable over alleged worsening poverty and hunger.The party said its responsibility as the opposition is to demand accountability and ensure the government responds to the needs of the people.In a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Ikaebimo Mark, the PDP said the government’s response to its earlier criticism exposed what it described as a lack of policy depth.The opposition accused the Diri administration of diverting attention from growing poverty, hunger and declining living standards instead of addressing the challenges.It argued that the government lacks a deliberate economic blueprint to tackle unemployment, reduce poverty and improve the welfare of Bayelsans.The PDP also questioned the government’s inability to provide verifiable data showing progress in reducing hunger and poverty during the past six years.”After more than six years in office, Bayelsans deserve to know why poverty continues despite unprecedented financial inflows to the state,” the statement said.It also questioned why unemployment remains high, businesses are struggling, investments have failed to materialise and many families cannot afford basic necessities.The party said the government’s Prosperity Agenda has failed to deliver its promised economic opportunities and shared prosperity.According to the PDP, Bayelsans now judge the administration by their daily realities, which it described as hunger, unemployment, hopelessness and declining purchasing power.The party maintained that it would continue to hold the government accountable, describing the role as a fundamental democratic obligation.It further argued that the reported cordial relationship between Governor Douye Diri and President Bola Tinubu would remain meaningless unless it translates into improved living conditions for Bayelsans.The PDP also dismissed claims that it is factional, describing such allegations as a deliberate attempt to create a false political narrative.It insisted the party remains united, strong and the most formidable political platform in Bayelsa State.The statement added that the PDP would continue strengthening its structures across the state’s 105 wards and eight local government areas ahead of the 2028 governorship election.”The suffering of Bayelsans is too serious to be politicised. The government must stop arguing and start governing,” the party stated.
