A non governmental organization (NGO) Women Tower Foundation Inc has organised school quiz competition for Governor Ugwuanyi education empowerment in all the secondary schools in Enugu north senatorial zone.
The competition is put in place to raise academic standard and reposition the curriculum of education to meet the global challenges of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the country.
Ebere Asogwa founder of the NGO said at the grand finale of the quiz competiton held at Adada building complex in Nsukka local government council secretariat that the quiz competition was organized to encourage students participation in elections and appreciate the governor’s developmental projects in the three senatorial zones of the state.
She explained that the foundation embarked on the competition to mobilize support in schools for the 2019 general elections to ensure that governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi emerges victorious at the polls for the second term in the 2019 general elections.
She noted that while moving round schools in the zone, tthe foundation mobilized students within the ages of 18 and above to obtain permanent voters card (PVC) which is the power to vote and be voted for in the country.
Asogwa noted that 21 secondary schools participated in the competition while six made it to the final stages of the quiz competition.
She said that the elimination process was adopted in the exercise untill the best six emerged.
‘’ The foundation engage in various empowerment schemes, widows, aged women and retirees, healthcare, youths and cultural heritages of communities among others.
“Last December the foundation held the first ever Edem Ani cultural festival where all known masqurades, local foods and traditional ‘Akwete and Asioke’ attires were on display to showcase the tradtional heritages of the ancient community of all
ages in Nsukka local government, Enugu state’’ she noted.
The founder of the NGO also said that the quiz competition was aimed at improving the retentive memory of students in all the secondary schools in the zone till last six which includes, St. Cyprian Science school, Nsukka LGA, Girls Secondary School Iheaka, Igboeze South LGA, Community Secondary school, Uda Igboeze north LGA, Community Secondary school, Obollo Etiti, Udenu LGA, Community Secondary Ohodo Igbo Etiti LGA, Community Secondary school Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani LGA and Orinadu Community Secondary school.
In a remark at the grand finale, the chairman Prof. Onyimonyi of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka said that education is uppermost in girl/boy child growth for brighter future, adding that the female child has faster growth than the male child on education in the country.
Prof. Onyimonyi noted that Information communication technology (ICT) has fast tracked learning in both primary, post primary schools and tertiary institutions of learning, explaining that younger generations has to key into the e-learning to be nationally relevant and internationally connected in the global challenges of ICT.
He commended the six schools that made it to the final stage of the competition and urged the foundation to sustain the project and make it an annual competition for schools in the zone.
He however called on both the local and state governments to assist the foundation achieve her lofty dream to extend the competition to other schools across the state and beyond.
Prof. Onyimonyi observed that most of the scholars in the competition. scored below average in mathematics and called on both the state and federal governments to address the fallen standard of mathematics and other core subjects at the secondary school level to enable students adapt for the nation to catch them young.
St. Cyprian Girls secondary, Nsukka LGA won gold the trophy with 35 points, Girls secondary school Iheaka, Igboeze South LGA won the silver with 30 points and Orinadu community secondary school, Uzo-Uwani LGA won the bronze with 25 points while all the participating schools of the competition were rewarded with cartoons of branded Gburugburu exercise books courtesy of Women Tower Foundation Inc.
Highlights of the occasion was display of cultural dances of the foundation cultural troop, drama and recitation on ‘’Girl child education as role model of the youths’’ anchored by Ugwu Chinas Virgina of Urban girls secondary school, Nsukka.
