The Controller General of Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Haliru Nababa, has charged new Assistant Correction Officers to maintain discipline and exhibit good professional conduct while in service.
Nababa said this on Friday in his address on the occasion of the passing out parade of 226th Basic Recruit Course at Correctional Service Training School, Enugu State.
He said the course was designed to addressing the fundamental basic rudiments of Correctional practices which new entrants into the service ought to know.
“As Assistant to the officer’s corps, the duties of these trainees range from custodial and non custodial and from non-skill-based to other rudimentary work, ” he said.
Nababa, represented by Ovie Esezobor, Assistant Controller General, zone ‘B’ Benin city, reminded them that National security was part of the numerous tasks of a Correctional Service officer.
“Therefore, the Nigerian Correctional Service under my leadership has zero tolerance to indiscipline and unprofessional conduct.
“You must remain resolute in carrying out your lawful duties in consolidating the gains of the past administration, ” he said.
According to him, the officers and men of service have proven themselves worthy ambassadors in various joint operations across the country.
The controller general also said he had made capacity building and welfare of personnel one of his cardinal agenda while aiming to take the service to greater heights.
Speaking, the commandant of the training school, Habiba Ahmad said she was happy with the graduands, especially with their resilient during the passing out parade under heavy rainfall.
“I am proud of them; I felt like jumping for joy because it means that they can stand any kind of pressure which is good for the service, ” she said.
Ahmad said that one of the challenges the school grappled with in the course of the six months training was, lack of trainers in some courses, particularly, the ICT.
“We didn’t have a trainer in ICT and that made us to drop the course, we have reported to the authorities and the issue is receiving attention, ” she said
The commandant said the assistant officers were trained in handling of inmates, drills, arms handling among others.
According to her, 255 officers drawn from the six geo political zones passed out during the ceremony after six months training.
