Rights group writes Gov. Mbah over land grabbing, illegal encroachment
A Civil Rights Organisation, Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network (CRRAN), has petitioned Gov. Peter Mbah asking for his urgent intervention to restrain a private developer from further encroachment into a piece of land marked “green area” by the Enugu State Ministry of Environment.
In the petition entitled “Appeal for urgent intervention” signed by it’s national president, Olu Omotayo Esq, the Organization urged the governor to condenm and restrain one Mr Chukwuemeka Omeke, a private developer from carrying out illegal building on an area marked “a green area”.
“We write to you concerning the nefarious activities of one Chukwuemeka Oliver Omeke, who started building on an area marked “Green Area” by Ebeano Tunnel Enugu.
“It is surprising that the said Mr Omeke, who claimed to be a Developer, went to the place and removed the Signpost (marking the place a “Green Area” and ordered his workmen to start construction on the land.
“It would be recalled that the complaint in respect of this matter had earlier commanded your attention vide a petition dated 12th June 2023, sent to your office, ” the Organization said.
CRRAN recalled that following the earlier Petition in June 2023, the officials of the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources retraced their steps and stopped Mr Omeke, from further construction on the place and placed a signpost marked “NOTICE! NOTICE! NOTICE!!! ERECTION OF STRUCTURE IS PROHIBITED HERE (GREEN AREA), ORDER BY MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT”.
The rights group reminded the governor that building any structure on the “Green Area” would distort the master plan of that area.
The group said it condemned the lawlessness exhibited by Mr. Omeke, in an unequivocal term.
According to the organization, his action of removing the signpost marking the area “Green Area” was a criminal assault on the authority of the state.
“We, therefore, urge you as the Chief Security Officer of the state to, immediately order an investigation of this criminal act, with a view to prosecuting this culprit in order to serve as deterrent to others.”
“We further submit that whatever structure built on that place is in grave violation of Extant Town Planning Laws of Enugu state which must be resisted by the good government of Enugu State ” Omotayo said.
