A group, Igbo-Eze South for Good Governance has commended the Executive Chairman of Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, Dr. Fidelis Odo, for empowering 71 indigenes of the council area with political appointments.
FirstNews recalls that in a letter dated 2nd May, 2018, signed by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. (Mrs.) Ukwueze Benedette, Senior Special Assistants and Executive Assistants were appointed by the Executive Chairman.
According to the letter which clearly stated that it was not a civil service appointment but a political appointment, it took effect from 13th April, 2018 and hoped that the people of Igbo-Eze South will benefit immensely from the wealth of experience and hard work of the said appointees.
The group in a statement by its coordinator, Mr. Ikem Eze, said that the appointments approved by the council boss, was a welcome development as it would go a long way to ameliorate the conditions of the said appointees considering the harsh economic situation facing the country.
“It will create a sense of belonging among the people of the council area as they would truly believe that they are part and parcel of the system.
“These people that were given political appointments will not only be useful in terms of political administration of the council area but will majorly be useful in the area of political mobilization for the
re-election of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in 2019.
“As a group whose objective is anchored on advocating good governance in Igbo-Eze South, we can never be against the chairman of the council as was being misconstrued in some quarters. All we are interested in is for him to administer good governance that will positively affect the
wellbeing of the people.” The group explained.
While noting that the empowerment was one of the many demands of the people, the group added that they expect the chairman to also look into upgrading at least four health centers across the four development centres for easier accessibility of good health care by the rural dwellers.
“After doing the health centre project, he should also consider renovating at least four primary schools across the four development centers that are in bad condition to complement what the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board is doing.
“With these developments in place, he has indirectly created an enabling environment for the people’s Governor of Enugu state to have greater support from the people of the area in 2019 general election.” They added.
The group said that they were confident that the council has the financial resources to carry out the above projects as they were aware of what comes in from the Federal allocation and what was being spent for wage bill.
“As we once again commend the chairman for responding to the yearnings of the people, we also congratulate the new appointees of the council and urge them to at all times endeavour to truly assist the chairman in rendering people oriented leadership that they will be proud of after their tenure.” They maintained.
FirstNews recall that the group had earlier accused the chairman of poor leadership and lack of empowerment of the people of the area.
